Interchangeable 928 parts from VW, Audi, etc.
 

Looking over my Pcars, I notice Audi and VW and other "generic?" markings on several parts (relays, trans, AC compresssor, O2 Sensor, wheels, etc.). It makes sense that dist. caps, injectors, various fittings, brake pads, hoses, console parts, door fittings, bearings, shocks, and many other relatively generic parts are compatible with several marques/models.

For example, the common and important "..053" relay for the 928 fuel pump, horn, and a couple other things...I have some 053s for the VW that are new manufacture with great build quality. When I order these relays from companies, I get all sorts from Porsche-made to some manufactured in 3rd world countries. I like the newer VW plastic cased ones better than the aluminum covered ones. I'm hopeful that there are Audi/VW/Mercedes or other newer Porsche model relays and parts that will interchange but am not sure.

As possible examples, the transaxle has Audi markings, the AC compressor is Japanese, etc. It would make sense that these and other parts were made to fit various cars too. After all, the German manufacturers have a resputation for "collaborating" (e.g. the Porsche Cayenne/VW Toureg, the Audi TT/VW platform, etc.)

It would be nice to compile a list of interchangeable parts with the 928 that are made for VW, Audi, Mercedes, Bosche, etc.

Some of the Bosch vendor catalogs have cross-references that help somewhat. I made sure to get one from EBay for fuel injection. Not a ton of transoperability, but some. Someone posted recently about using cheaper MB injectors in lieu of the Porsche units.

Hot water valve (the one that commonly fails on the engine side of the firewall) can be replaced with AUDI part ( 431-818-809-A) for about 1/2 the stealership price.

Good idea for variety & alternative sourcing but not necessarily cheaper.
Some years ago I tracked down some Porsche relays that were also used by VW but the VW prices were higher....

Caps and rotors on 32v models are indentical to those used on some Volvo models. I've picked up rotors @ $21 each and caps @ $27 ea.

The lower ball joint replacement rubber boots are same as the Audi 5000. I don't have the part number with me but I'm sure someone will post it. Also the MAF is the same as some BMW models.

Rotors? Hmm, curious to know which model volvo the rotors match 32V cars for.

I've got volvo dist. caps and ign. coils sitting in a box in the garage to fit when I do my timing belt job (hopefully starting this weekend.. 1yo daughter permitting), but I couldn't find a matching Bosch/Beru part number for the rotors across any other models so I ended up getting Porsche rotors. Rockauto had a special on the Bosch parts and I got 2 caps and 2 coils for $80 total.

The coils are also found in some Alfa's and BMW's - I got the info from a Bosch parts catalogue on Bosch Australia's site.

The MAF is also found in some BMW 5's and Audi Quattro's from the late 80's.. but pricing looks to be no real advantage.

E34 M5 3.8 uses same MAF as 928 IIRR. Rotors and gaps are used in Volvo 740 which has distributor at rear of the engine IIRR.

Mercedes Benz Auto Box 722 series are used in 928s and designated A28 series. MB series numbers are found on the side of auto casing just above the pan, so pan gaskets, filters, B2 pistons etc are all interchangeable. I have found that I can get pan gaskets much cheaper at European auto part shops and I got a B2 piston at half the price from the local MB deal than what I could get at OPC with next day delivery.

The MAF is found in the E34 5-series from 88-92 with the 3.6 engine.
There's two different BMW part numbers, for engines with/without cats:
13 62 1 311 950 and 13 62 1 715 888, both of which refer to Bosch part number 0 280 214 001 which is what Bosch list as the one for the 32v 928 as well (928 606 141 00).

I figured that someone would have the same fuel-pump too, but haven't found any matching part numbers yet to confirm. I know Saab's from 88-93 had the bosch LH system, but not sure they use the same pump.

OK, this makes it much more common.

Required delivery rate for 928 is much larger than any Saab I think. When original LH fuel pump goes there is only one good solution. Bosch generic 044 part number high output pump. Its under $250 in here locally even and thats cheap. There is some talk in archives what little it takes to install one into 928.
