Thumbs up Homemade flywheel holding tool

Just successfully made a tool tonight to stop the engine rotating when removing the front pulley bolt. I cut a portion of a starter ring gear off of a scrap flywheel { i think nearly any would work- I used a ford }, I used about 4 teeth which I welded to a piece of square 3/4" stock 1&1/2" long. Then I made a plate to go across the hole from the clutch slave , this has 2 holes 60 mm apart which the original bolts fit thru- I made them a little over size to ease aligning. To get the final alignment of it all drilled a oversize hole in the middle of the plate and a small hole which I tapped a thread into the end of the square piece that already had the teeth on it. Then I used a small bolt that fit the hole to hold to the flat peice and got everything to line up, tack welded it , checked it and did my final welding. Worked a charm first time, took a pipe on a 1/2 " breaker bar to get the bolt loose. <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />

The flywheel lock is a vital tool for a belt change, especially for an auto. While you are to be congratulated on your ingenuity and enthusiasm, those with easier access (or less manufacturing capability!) might prefer to buy the forged factory tool.

About $25 for early cars, $20 for late cars from Jeannie at (828) 766-9280.

Wally, Thanks, I am new to this 928 stuff and have read many of your posts on Rennlist and 928 tech page Excellent stuff! It was more a matter of needing the tool right then and having a hacksaw and mig welder to build it than not wanting to buy it! If you guys were down the street... or even in the same country....
