Unhappy 928GT not daily ...

is it necessary to have my wife go crank up the GT when I'm out of town to charge the battery? I'm talking the car sits a maximum of 7 days @ a time here...??

thanks

any battery maintainers care to share why they would yank out the spare & all that other crap to charge? pain??

Greg,

Your car should be good for more than 7 days without a charge.

I don't think any of the battery maintainers are yanking anything out to charge their batteries. Rather, they are smiply using the positive terminal in the engine bay.

I agree, I have left mine for over two weeks with the alarm on and no issues. Also, with the Chicago winters I can easily let it sit in the garage for more than 7 days.

Of course I go out and visit the " Red Devil" as 928 Maniac keeps calling it

Please respond if you use a maintainer and please share the installation experience.
Thanx

No, it's shouldn't be necessary. I've left my car sit for a couple weeks. But rarely.

If your battery does discharge in that time, your car has some excess drain on the battery that should be hunted down and removed. Better folks than I have discussed how to do this on Rennlist.

Cool

Bad S4,

I use a maintainer sporadically... mainly in winter months. The unit I have is a Deltran. It is a mainainter/2 amp charger and came with several types of connectors.

Rather than mess with the cover, spare, etc. every time I wanted to charge the battery, I did a simple install where I dropped a "pigtail" out of the battery box. When I am not charging, I hide the pigtail under the carpet.

All standard disclaimers apply, YMMV, etc.

1. Remove cover and spare.
2. Disconnect gound strap.
3. Drill hole in battery cover large enough
to accommodate a 16 ga. speaker type wire
and grommet ---- grommet is very
important.
4. Install grommet and pass cable through
grommet.
5. Install inline fuse (5 amp) on Battery Positive and make connections... Make sure you have your polarity correct.
6. Route cable to cabin and put car back together.

You might vary fuse size based on charging needs. This is not a connection for rapid, high current charging....
I only use the trickle/maintainer so my charge current doesn't exceed 2 amps.

HTH,
Scott

In 99 I replaced the battery with an Interstate an began using a Battery Tender, Jr that I picked up in WalMart for $35. http://www.batterytender.com/index3.html
It has the overcharge ckt and LED.
Long cords allow easy hook up to battery and hide the plug under the carpet when not in use.Never met the PO but he had used the same unit (because the wires matched).

Because of snow, salt, and stones the 928 sits out most of the winter.

Red face

am I getting this there are front connections...u can hook up the tender to the front under the hood instead of the back? seems troublesome to have to drill holes & run wires under the back...hell I'd hate have to lift the hatch everytime!

Have been using a Shumacher 1.5 amp maintainer for years. I've permanently mounted it in the spare tire compartment (fits real nice next to the tire), run the +/-connector wires to the battery (wires fit nicely under the battery box lid with a tight seal), and O-connecters permanently fit under the nuts on the battery clamps. The power cord just pokes out from under the carpet over the spare (can tuck it in when not in use). To charge, just plug the charger into an extension cord, run the cord out the bottom of the door (fits nice), and plug it in. No hassle solution.

Charger is $37 at http://www.batterychargers.com/detai...2D12S&catid=16

Thanks Rich,
I think your approach is more in line with how I wanted to deal with the issue of battery maintenance.Although I will probably go for the out-board unit, yours is a good solution.
