Cool frustrating gas smell

Hi all. I have been frustrated with this gas smell. I have checked the y connector it is fine. I have deduced that the smell is coming from the passenger side of the engine toward the back near the air filter. gas smell comes in after i have run the engine and have let it sit for a while. when i turn the engine back on it is then that i smell gas. if i have the car sitting for a long time and turn on the car no gas smell. any suggestions?
thanks tim

Is the smell stronger when the fuel is high or low?

Tim-

year model?

Have you checked the fuel pipe connectors on the p-side? Also, have you looked around the regulator (underside included using an inspection mirror)?

If I were you, I would remove the air cleaner while the car is in the garage. Place a paper towel under the p-side fuel pipe - and under the regulator. Turn the key on and off a few times (wait about 2-3 seconds between on and back to off) to permit the fuel pump to pressurize the system. Don't start the car - just pressurize the fuel system.

Inspect the paper towels for signs of leakage (wetness).

I would hesitate driving the car until you have found and corrected the smell of raw gas. Too many of our cars are now donor cars due to fuel related fires in the engine compartment.
