Post HVAC System

Have an odd recurring problem. Heater works fine then one day quits (AC does the same). Pulled the relay, jumpered it the blower works. Swap XXI and XXII, nothing happens put them back and it seems to start working (not right away mind you). Went ahead and bought two new relays from 928 Spec. put those in and nothing. Since the t-belt and tune up she runs like a banshee but getting a bit cold around here and need to get the system working once and for all. Any suggestions. Also, just had the electric mirrors quit (just for fun I guess). Appreciate your advice.

Hmmmm....the heater and the AC are intermittant in operation? I would suspect (initially) the HVAC head electrical connectors on the back and sides of the head unit. The AC condenser does have a seperate electrical connector on the back.

Have you checked that the flaps are all positioning properly based on the flap positioner selector switch?

One quick check would be to pop the bonnet and air cleaned box, and have an assistant watch the heater valve when you first start the car - the heater valve should go fully closed upon start up. Then position the temperature controller slide to the 'full' heat position - the heater valve should open fully, and the flaps for the heat exchanger should position for full heat.

There is quite a bit to the HVAC system - but these simple checks are a good start I think. More info would be great - like what you may have already tried beyond the relay swapping would be good also.

I'd recommend replacing the fuse for the blower motor and cleaning the fuse holder contacts with fine emory cloth. Check to see the condition of that fuse holder on the back side of the fuse panel - this fuse connector handles a relatively high load and may overheat, resulting in the wire connectors and the plastic board that supports the fuse holder to get a bit fried over time.

If yours is in that condition, try relocating the wires from the current fuse holder to an empty fuse holder somewhere else on the board (I think the one immediately to the left of the blower fuse position is vacant). Be sure to mark the new position on the board, as well as on the fuse chart in your owner's manual.
