Z, Lag, Tim,

Where did you get the fittings to tie the Super FMU into the fuel system?

I had to make some by silver soldering German fittings to NPT fittings, per advice of Jim at 928 Int.

TIA,
Andy K

You could put one of those on if you wanted to. It's a matter of personal preference. One of those loud WHOOSH blow off valves might be considered one step closer to one of those coffee can exhaust tips though.

As you probably found out, those aren't exactly the easiest things to come by. I don't know if Tim will provide such hard to come by information or not, but I guess he might consider selling some of the fittings if asked.

I think if you placed the mercedes 'kompressor' badge on the car somewhere, most $8/hr inspection people wouldn't ask twice - especially since the install is so well done.

Very kewl Lag!

This might **** you off... it certainly isn't meant to, but I know nothing of your driving history or more importantly, driver's training. Now that you've got Godzilla lurking under your hood, perhaps a good driver's training course is in order- don't you get killed in that thing.
Thanks N!.

No, it doesn’t **** me off at all as I’ve been thinking about doing that even before the supercharger install; your point is well taken, and is sound advice.

As for my driving history, no tickets as I’m more of an accelerator versus a speeder; I usually drive no more than 9 mph over the speed limit. Umm, except to and from SITM where we drove WAY too fast, and for some supercharger testing; YAHOO!

Z sums the car and driving experience up well:

… The car is very deceptively quiet and well mannered at idle and part throttle regular driving. It would be very easy for someone that didn't know what was going on to find themself in big trouble. This is NOT a car that you'd just casually give the keys to someone else. Very stealthy, and very Dr. Jekyl/Mr. Hyde when you put your foot down.
Again, to really appreciate what he wrote is to get a ride in one yourself. I guarantee you afterwards that you will do everything in your power to put one on your own car. The transformation is truly that amazing.

I know I’ve said this before, but it bears repeating, that boy Tim Murphy is something else!

By the way, I talked to Tim the other night, and we will be going with another company’s FMU. Tim has 3 Vortech Super FMU’s at home, none of which have the disc/ring combo we sorely missed at the dyno.

Inside the driver side front fender well.

By fraggle:

During the course of the install, I told the guys I was thinking about putting the turbo Porsche 944 scripted TURBO badge on the back as I’ve always loved it’s styling. However, I was quickly shot down by both, as their point is that it’s not a turbo charged car; how can I argue sound reasoning like that?

Instead, they suggested a ‘kompressor’ badge, or the Vortech supercharger badge which I’m not sure what it looks like.

Do any of you have any opinions/suggestions?

Yes, the O2 sensor is still in the loop and functions the same as it always did. The FMU used replaces the stock fuel pressure regulator. It acts as a normal fuel pressure regulator when the car is not under boost, with the exception that the fuel pressure is adjustable. Under boost the FMU begins to raise the fuel pressure in relation to the level of boost. The rate of fuel pressure increase in relation to boost is adjustable. For example, the fuel pressure might be set to increase at a rate of 8psi of fuel pressure for each psi of boost, 10psi of fuel pressure increase for each psi of boost, or some other ratio. Changing the rate is accomplished by changing the size of a disk and ring combination inside of the FMU. A series of different sized disks and rings are in the tuning kit for the FMU. One of those rings is what Vortech left out of the tuning kit that they sent, and of course it was the one that was would have been needed at the dyno.

The original stock clutch setup that's on Tim's car is still fine, without any unusual issues in the three years that a supercharger has been on his car. One thing that can be considered kind of an advantage with a centrifugal supercharger is that it doesn't make huge torque way down low, and the torque builds smoothly. The drive train is subject to a lot less strain that way. If you've ever been to a drag strip, there's a fair chance you've seen a transmission or drive line come apart. More than likely it happened at the starting line, where there's the most inertia to be overcome to get the car moving. Sudden big torque, way down low, sticky tires, and a heavy car are not kind to your drive train. The power of the centrifugal builds more smoothly as speed increases. It's more like the acceleration of a jet plane. The acceleration also keeps increasing with speed like it does in a jet.

Having said that, how your clutch does depends on you. If you rev the engine up and dump the clutch, don't expect ot to last forever.
