My '88 was going through the assembly line. The manufacture date was 11/87. I am pretty sure that as I am working on my car today, there was a German engineer/assembler touching my car and getting it ready for the road.

I was fixing small stuff today and noticed the "release date" on the sill.

One of the reasons I enjoy this car so much, is thinking about the history it has been through. I wish I knew all of the PO's that owned it, but the fact that I am working on it, tweaking it, making it back to how it came out of the factory. 20 years ago, it was rolling through the factory awaiting it's first owner.

I often wonder how that person felt as he took 1st delivery of this car.

I also noticed on Ang's '90, that they put the exact date it left the line. May 15 1990. Mine just says 11/87.

I think the same thing, then I look at the original paperwork and see it was leased.. no intent to keep it... I have a feeling the first owner of my car never felt the passion.

Sean- I've had similar thoughts about the history of my car, born 2 years after yours.

My VIN sticker is dated December 21, 1989, which I presume is the date assembly began, as my Certificate of Authenticity lists a production completion date of January 15, 1990. As such, it appears to have taken approximately 3 weeks from start to finish with the Christmas and New Years holidays in between. I noted the VIN sticker says manufactured in West Germany.

Recall that particular holiday season was a very historic time for the two Germanies. Just a month before, entering West Berlin had become permitted, with November 9 being generally considered the day the Wall fell. On December 22, the historic Brandenburg Gate (where Reagan had made his famous speech in 1987) was opened, and visa-free travel began the next day. I still vividly remember those days, watching the television images of the crowds celebrating, climbing on and chipping away at the Wall. But little did I realize at the time, on an assembly line only a few hundred miles away, sat the car I now own today.

There had to be some happy workers on that assembly line, although a little distracted I'm sure. Exciting times, wish I could have been there...

I would like to know the good PO's...but meeting the 'bad' PO's would make me lose sleep I think...

It's so strange to think that I was in high school totally oblivious to the fact that on that day a brand new sports car rolled of the line which I would own 18 years later.

I had to go look............my car is dated 12/87 on the door sill.

It certainly would be nice to be in the factory back then to see it go through its assembly and final destination but it would be another 3 years 'till I made it to Stutgart and the factory. Truly memorable days indeed.

1319 for my VIN.

As far as the registry, I submitted it over a year ago, I figure I'll resubmit with the '90 and some pictures sometime in the future.
