Default Pod Removal technique with pics

When I was searching for instructions for removing the pod, I found several good write-ups but none with pics. I'm a visual guy and it helps to see what I can expect to find when I open something up, so I took some pics and did a brief write-up of the technique I used (over and over and over again.)

Pod Removal for an 85

If this gives a different angle or shows somebody something they haven't seen before, then it worked.

I got to where I can take the wheel and pod off in about 10 minutes, and reinstallation takes about 15 including resetting the clock. Although I didn't actually remove the pod, I just pulled it off and left it hang by the wires for the switches on the sides so I could get to the gauges.

Excellent. Thanks, Mike. I plan on replacing my bulbs this winter, so this is helpful info.

Nice Mike, it seems I always forget how to do it, soon after I have worked on the pod. Note that pre-85 don't have the levers, the connectors just pull off.

I need to change out the bulbs, and install a (euro tach with a l/100km gauge), in my new 86.5.

Matt - (here's a bulb list), if you haven't seen it.

On my '85, I didn't have to remove the signals/wiper/cruis switch when the pod was removed. This was the same for the 'arts car too (86.5).

Imre,

The first time I did this, I wiggled the pod up over it too, and you're right it's not required. This time the signal/wiper/cruise started moving so I gave it a shot and it made the whole thing easier and quicker. To each his own.

I've updated it and added the comments from Porket and Imo000. I've also broken it out into several pages and added some more pics for those of you who just love to see the guts of what you're going to be working on. (Like me).

Comments appreciated.

Thanks, Ken, I've had that saved to my desktop since you first posted it.

Hi Mike

Great instructions, made the job very easy. I got my 81 928s (82 model) pod off in about 40 minutes. Fitted the leds from Nicole, just waiting for the new traditional style bulbs (I decided to change them all)

couple of minor differences in my car
5. As well as the 2 10mm bolts I had a philips head screw.
6. I had a 10mm bolt on the drivers side, not allan head
9. This was my only problem, I could not pull the pod over the column. Eventually found a couple of cables behind the pod were taped in place so I had to cut the tapes

Thanks

Marton,

Thanks, I'll add those comments to the website and mention that it's for an '82 MY. I'm glad it helped.

Rixter,

Andrew once commented that my watch is clearly too tight and it's cutting off the circulation to my hand.

Thanks Mark.

I think if someone takes pics and does the write-up the first time they do it, they can notice things that don't seem important the second and any subsequent times. The write-ups are for first timers, so they're probably best written by first-timers and then you can add to them with stuff for other MYs, or from people with more experience about the 'gotchas'.

I hit every snag imaginable when I did the clutch assembly, but then when someone reads the write-up I think they're better prepared for what they can expect. And it might be me reading it the next time I do it. JMO.

Thanks again.

I woud use capitol letters on the disconnect the battery first, the pod switches can short out on the aluminum pod once they are pulled from their position, and yes once a wire burns then is off the the CE panel for some surgery........great writup

Fabulous write-up, and great pictures!!! Anyone have any input on the differences between this one and an 89' model? I have a spare pod that I'm going to have redone, and this sure would come in handy when it gets back.
TIA.

Default blue LEDS installed

Hi Mike

thanks again for the write up; made this an easy job to install the blue LEDS from Nicole.
Now just need to figure out how to get a sharper foto; probably stand a short tripod on the seat? My hands start to shake after the first few seconds...
