Jim,

thanks for the link... thats a pretty good price. I still need to do a little more digging and the new 740 is due out next week. I'll probably wait to see what it looks like and if there are any new worthwhile enhancements. Like you, My research boiled down to Alpine and Pioneer and after considering Blau, Namkamichi, Eclipse among many others. Even if price weren't an issue, the Pioneer line stacks up to any high end heads, IMHO. But the Blau (maybe even the Nak) looks nost fitting.

Dr. Bob: I just installed a 12" sub in my rear hatch and (please forgive my lack of humility), I'm very pleased with how it looks (or more accuratly, doesn't look). Its mounted so that it uses the spare tire well as the enclosure and looking in the hatch, it's invisible. I lost less than 1" in compartment depth and the carpeting looks better that the "pulled taught" stock mat. You do lose the abiltiy to carry a spare tire which is not for everyone. (I'm running 18"s, carry a plug kit and compressor and have decided to go without the spare (lets hope I don't regret that decision)).

Well,
IMO. The Blau that came in Pattycakes had been repaired twice. The last sticker was in 84'...not very dependable. The critter was dated -looking- though it had some neat features for an early Quartz.
The only thing that I found to fit turned out to be a cheapy Awia. Measured the puppy with a machinist's ruler for tight tolerances. Was not interested in a mega watt device with remote changer and multiple amps. The Awia CDC-X217 unit, puts out 45 watts per speaker with sensitivity ranges that only a lonely ranch dog would be able to discern. Bypassed the Porsche fader by splicing the wires after clipping 3 inches from the Blau amp. All wires equal length routed under carpet, rocker panel side, around fuse panel -top side- back under carpet and to rear of unit slack taken up, zip tied in bundles. Used existing speakers because I was not about to disassemble the interior to find out there would be FEW IF ANY alternates to fit in the stock cutouts and not deform the leather- early model sub surface mounting blues-. Speakers work and sound fine, thank you very much. My last closed box hearing test indicated outstanding hearing with no loss at any range of of the spectrum. So 20 years of manning the .50 cal, screaming turbine engines, and countless skirt chasing thunder runs have done no noticeable harm to my aural sensing devices. I don't push the speakers very hard so they might last another couple of years. Nicole, I will agree that the lighting is a little to bright in either blue or orange mode and the buttons are way to small, and true , features like auto on timer activated pre-set stations for 'THE' favorites radio shows/Blue Plate specials/personalities is definately over the edge. However, for under $150.00 I have a great sounding CD playing unit that looks like it was installed by Vatican craftsmen for God! The console trim cover for those who have't REALLY looked at it is actually a foam/sponge filled piece strengthened by thin strips of vinyl. With a little razor blade work on those vinyl strips the unit fit like it was molded in with no gaps or deformations. Only glitch is when you remove the anti theft plate is that darned blinking red light! Saved all of the old unit. Radio/cassette, ant.amp., fader, suppressors, amp.,. With only the radio and ant. amp. actually removed from car for storage. It looks and sounds good, so.... I'm happy

DaveG is right. The tweeters are more directional. In the 928, they should be on either side of the front seats so that the listener is inside the broadcast cone. Woofers are not nearly as directional.

Eric,
I can buy into the frequency, wave form , directional propagation, and one's location within the cone. What I don't buy into is that as a 928 driver -any driver, really- the cone theory has a lot of big holes in it.
As I sit in my sHARk;
1. The speakers are approximately 58" apart.
2. The right speaker from center of speaker to my right ear is aproximately 47 1/2".
3. The left speaker to left ear is 28".
4. The speakers are mounted directly across from each other and are self cancelling to a degree.
5. There is an identical amount of travel in the balance **** from center to center.
6.In my case the speaker wires are identical in composition and length.
Draw a car box picture and just plug in any degree number for the wave to expand outward from, draw the cones check out where they overlap in relation to the driver in a normal driving position. If the balance on the set is correct at factory center- most people just leave it there- and power to the speakers is equal then our ears as a species have been lying to us for some time about stereo. When you factor in and draw the cones from the rear speakers the picture gets even uglier... go figure! Just draw it and think about it, or, just sit in the car and try to figure it out. I still say that for economy of space, ease of installation, appearance... the mid/high range is mounted for anything but great, balanced sound.

Might be a good spot to post a set of MB Quart speakers I recently saw for sale on another Board I visit. I see lots of 928 owners using these as an upgraded speaker system:

New MB Quarts FS

Standard disclaimer: I know nothing about the merchandise or the person selling them, yadda, yadda, yadda....

I also have had good luck with Pioneer, although the component I am speaking of, is a Craig Pioneer automotive 4-track tape deck. A period piece, I'll be putting into my '56 356A. Still playing well, after 3 decades! I am running out of the tapes, though...
I appreciate the linc to the SBH site, that is the best price I've seen, by far, for the DEH-P7300/730. I was going to go with a price of about $325, which was the best before SBH. MANY THANKS!!!!

Brett,

You're welcome.

I try to help my fellow 928 brethren make the right decision. However, we can only hope the ones stuck in the blue rut of yesteryear may see the light. The light of progress is so glorious and righteous that only the blind and weak have difficulty in finding the true path.

Pioneer be to all.
