Default Audio oddity - Mute in pax door

I finally got around to putting a new head unit in - JVC 5306 DVD/CD etc. The PO of cours had done some hacking - the Pioneer bullet connectors had been twisted on to the original leads and taped up - big black ball of cr@p. I'll do this right - rip off all the tape and twisted connections, identify the speaker leads properly, solder the joints and cover with shrink tubing, cable tie the rats nest into neatness. Found an unswitched power source on the fuse board. Test it - oops , missed the aerial power, fix that, works as advertised. Re-arrange a couple of connections on RHS to allow unit to fully slide home, still works. Put sides on dash/tunnel, cover fuse board, all tidy, great. On, off, still works.
Shut pax door - no sound? Open, sound returns. Remove pax side dash/tunnel cover, same behaviour? Pushing in courtesy switch doesnt do it. Actuating striker in door as though shutting it doesnt do it, by itself, or in any combination with striker? Putting the door on first latch then slowly pushing it home almost to second latch will do it though. Then I sit in pax seat , shut door in a normal manner - muted. The head unit display stays on , if playing a cd, the time keeps counting up, but no sound. I give the front end of the door a smack, near where the cable tube goes in, sound returns - WTF?
Is it possible I am getting a short on this left front speaker that is killing the whole audio output without affecting anything else? I would have expected a blown fuse. Or if one speaker drops out, the rest follow? I fitted the earth lead to the bolt on the top of the tunnel under the dash holding a metal strap for the side screws, so it should be a good connection.
I had the door skins refurbed last year, and new speakers fitted, but they have never missed a beat with the old unit since then.We did an 800mi run a couple of weeks ago with no problems anywhere...I guess I will have to pull that door skin now.

Sounds like a short or open in the area that flexes through the door pass-through... you will have to investigate by dismantling - or just run clean new wiring for this door
