928 Design
I was poking around the old WWW and learned that the AMC Pacer inspired the desgin of the 928 (and practically every other car, according to this ******):

I am in complete agreement with this gentleman. The Porsche 928 has four wheels... exactly like the Pacer!! It's such an obvious rip-off of a timeless design!
Shame on you, Dr. Porsche!!!

Sadly, once I came up behind a pacer and thought it was an older 928 from a distance. Check out the SEXY link. We could use an add like that.

The pacer was rather innovative, but I think the comments on that site are a bit over the top.
I always thought it would be interesting to have a white one with yellow interior. You know, like an egg on wheels.

Oddly,
There, was a blue one with a small block Chev. On Nellingen Kaserne, ober Esslinging near Stuttgart.
Nicole's old stompin grounds.
Two Brothers -Bikers, no less -who couldn't afford a Saab Turbo -the rage at the time - put it together.
Nicole remember that little two lane switch-back road just outside of Ost, Ost fildern, or
Ost Sud -not sure-?
Even a 911 couldn't hang with, let alone pass the damn thing. Was lowered a little with some wide but, tall tires. Had transmission problems when I last saw it. My Unit pulled out of Nellingen and moved to Weisbaden due to Noise Abatement issues though the complaining local authorities' sure liked to drink beer and shoot skeet Sunday's on 'our' Post.
Never saw the Pacer again, though I'm sure it stayed in circulation as car's were commonly sold to incoming soldiers by the outbound soldiers. We called them "Company Cars".
Yeah, they were ugly and a glass plant would have to put on another shift if the car was in a wreak, but, -my dirty secret- I like the look of 57' Buick's, 52' chev's, Merc's, Packards, and I would kill for a 58'Chev tu-tone candy apple.

John: I'm sure I'd know which road you are talking about, if you'd tell me where it took you. Was it the one to Esslingen, or the one to Neuhausen? Those two had the most twists.
Both have been redone in the meantime, the one to Neuhause no longer goes through the Körschtal. Instead they built a huge bridge. No more accidents, but also much less fun. The RX-7 loved that one...

I think he's referring to Anthony "Tony" Lepine of Wassau, Wisconsin. You can understand the confusion.
Actually the Pacer was an AMC knock off of the '63 split window Corvette. Their design engineering team fell just a tad short on the project.

Last year when I told one of my friends at work I was looking for a 928, he said "Oh, the one that looks like a Pacer."
Last month when I showed him my 91 S4 he didn't say anything about it looking like a Pacer.

OT, OT, OT!
Nicole,
I think Neuhause (n?) sounds about right.
Deutchland and Hawaii, both, threw off my internal compass, for different reasons.
In Germany, particularly, in the summer where it was still fairly light at 9:30 - 10:00pm the light always seemed to come from the wrong place in the sky especially, at sunset.
If you are familiar with a airfield Compass Rose: the one at Nellingen when orienting to sunset was way off, visually speaking. The Compass Rose is essentially, a large compass face maybe 20'x 20', painted on an unused piece of Taxi-Ramp far from electric lines and metal work. Used for calibrating aircraft magnetic and electronic compasses...very important!
I once had a conversation with Major Thomas -Maintenance Officer -, and Chief Warrant Officer 3 'Snortin' Nortin - supply officer, and test pilot, about the odd bearings in relation to sunset and the compass rose. Using the Mark 1, mod 0 eyeball as well as an M-2 Engineer and Artillery compass it still 'looked odd' We ended up 'getting happy' at the Officers Club, no resolution to what turned out to be a common feeling of being dis- oriented. Final decision was that as long as we could use a map/compass and find our way by air or ground ... the hell with it! So to make a long story even longer...
I could travel all over Germany with no problem using a reference point method but north, south, east, west worked for me only over long distances. Like Munich (Meunchen) was south of Stuttgart and Bremmerhaven was north. But in a local area I could not tell you which direction Esslingen, was but I can still get you to the Zugspitz , great Curry Wurst, Krankenhause, the Old Mill, the VW Dealer, the Alpine/Blaupunkt store blindfolded.
What I am saying is that Neuhase(n) Ost, Ostfildern , Ost Sud, Echterdingen, Groetzingen, und der Lake at Nekartailfingen are road turns without direction for me. Horrible isn't it?
I know how to get to the roads with twisty's and every twist on them but I don't "KNOW" where they are. Now look what you've done ! It's almost 6 AM and I can almost smell the Bakrei (ie?).
God! I miss fresh baked goods

P.S. There was a lot of room in those old Pacers. There's about an even dozon in the wreaking yards, here in Midland.
