What are the best models from each style.
78 and 79
80 - 82 928 non S
83 - 86 S models
86 1/2 stand alone
87 - 91 S4 including the GT
92 Euro - 95 GTS

I think I have it correct. Please make corrections if needed.

The 89 GT is the best of all...it is that simple ! ( for me ) but really as old as the cars are now it is not so much what started out as better BUT how much of the GOOD is left !!

78-86: 86 Euro/ROW S
87-95: 89 GT

Hmm interesting.....this is how I see it

For anything OB......the late 4.7L Euro 310hp engine...

For early S4's....I prefer the 88...electric cruise & brains with memory without the hassle of airbags or computer dash + 2.20 gearing!

Post 89....of course the 89GT is sweet.....but I pick the 95 GTS 5 speed....hopefully a low mileage late VIN car.....

My answer: I'd rather have two OB's than one S4 / GT / GTS (and I do :))

For those caught up with the "image" of their car (too many people are) keep in mind the two movies most associated with 928's:

On outright performance I lean towards weight and a more basic layout. You never see threads on OB's worrying about TBF and bent valves.

Far superior clutch for those of us who do up the performance
Better chance you will find a 5-speed (don't give me that BS the S4 auto is "just fine")

I like the OB nose better & the rear wing looks more formed to the body. The S4 wing always looked like an afterthought to me. Functional or not, never looked right.

Quite a few sunroof delete cars out there in the OB world.


As for Euro vs. US............it only takes about 3lbs of boost to even the playing field. :D


US 16V + Boost = more power than many boosted S4's for far less money. Tomorrow we will find out how much more power.:evilgrin: (and 250lbs or more lighter)


I love all 928's and I would never kick one out of my garage. Asking me to choose based on keeping the car stock........if I wanted something stock I would lease a new Volvo.

That's simple; the '91 S4 is the best of all.

All these are great cars I agree but of each model, which is better?
Is a 78 better than a 79?
Is an 85 better than an 86?
Which of the 4 GTS's are the best?

The reason for my question is there are several differences in year models and just curios.
I know some people will say S4's are better than OB's, but that’s not what I am asking. I would love to have a S4 but as luck would have it two 82's fell in to my lap. I am happy with them so not looking for an upgrade.

It does appear the most accomplished track sharks and the highest dynoing 928's ever are all S4+ models?? Even Todd only builds 32V 928 motors? If 16V is good then 32V is better!

I'm in Australia, so we only get ROW models here.. my votes are for:

OB style:
78 5-speed (no spoilers has been growing on me the more photos I see)
86.5 - 32V and big brakes

S4/GTS style:
91 GT
95 5-speed GTS

Eventually I'd like to own, or have owned, all of the above 4 variants :)

Sadly that will involve the Aussie government changing its protectionist laws designed to save a car industry that doesn't really exist :banghead:

Between '85 and '86 go with '86 as they got ABS as standard. Otherthan that pretty much the same.
