my dad just bought a 1988 928s4 5 speed, and the stereo wasn't working. So we took it out and someone had their own stereo and connections in there. we have no idea whats what, so we played around with it but we have no clue, and i don't know where the amp is located on the 928. wheres the best place to get all this wiring re-done, how much do u estimate it will cost. thanks

Stereo wiring is one of the places where a lot of damage is done to these cars. Be very careful! Many "installers" jab into wiring that isn't fuse protected, and the resultant damage cane be frustrating as well as expensive.

Power wiring for the head unit comes through a connector at the amplifier, which lives under the side cover next to the passenger seat. This is the one that has the knob on it for the rear hatch release on the right side of that seat. Assumes a LHD car of course, most common flavor in New Jersey.

Original wiring has a DIN-style plug that carries the low-level signals down to the amp. Amp has six separate speaker connections. OE speakers are 4-ohm so use your best judgement if you replace.

Stefan Wiess (sp?) has a reputation for expert knowledge of these cars. Search for his name in this forum and you;ll find some contact info too if somebody doesn't jump in here with it sooner.

The chances of finding a competent stereo installer who knows anything about the 928 are REALLY slim. The chances of getting your car screwed up are pretty high.

My suggestion is that you and your Dad do some research on this site, and on the Nichols site at <a href="http://www.nichols.nu" target="_blank">www.nichols.nu</a> and learn to do your own repairs and maintenance.

The stock amplifier is under the cover between the passenger seat and the door.

The first place to start looking is the power supply for the stereo unit. There should be 12 vdc on a red wire at the radio when the ignition switch is on. Also check fuse #22 - it furnishes power to the stock amp.

Where are you located Cantal? We in the PACNW are very lucky as we have 2 very skilled installers that both have 928's. One being myself the other a good friend of mine and the fool that got me hooked on this great car. We both have over 10 years of experience in installation. If your not to far off it may be worth your time. We have had customers come from canada, and as far off as Cali. drive up here.
If not make shure your comfortable with who ever you take the car too.

If you're able to share, I'm curious as to what your dad paid for the '88 5-spd. I was told by the dealer that he sold it to your dad for $9,500. I was into it on E-bay for $14.3k when Gary ended the auction.

He also told me he was fixing the stereo and a window that was off track for your dad as part of terms. So hard to trust and believe what salesmen say.
