Default Fire extinguisher

Hi to all,

I have just purchased a 1978 928 and I was wondering what you guys have done with regard to fitting a fire extinguisher in the cabin, where you have put it etc.

Maybe we can see some pictures, so I can make my final decision.

Thanks for all the help

Arthur

I would like to know the answer to that one too; as well as a recommendation for the extinguisher itself . In the meantime I can tell you what not to do - what I did - put it in a bag on top of the battery! It's convenient and very tidy, but how long will it take me to get to it?

on the face of the rear seat is a small bracket, remove the bracket and mount the extinguisher there

Here's a pic posted by Sterling:

He doesn't have rear seats, but I think he used the same mounting holes Rixter refers to. (Behind passenger seat, down low).

He does nice work doesn't he?

I would seriously argue against this particular method. After consulting Einstein (objects in a vehicle travel at the same speed as the vehicle), Newton (objects in motion tend to remain in motion) and, of course, Murphy (if it's loose, it'll hit you in the head), I would want it tied down.

next time you are in your 928, look behind you and down. The space is low and small, especially with the passenger seat all the way back, and the extinguisher fits in there snuggly. I suppose what you point out could be an issue if I rolled the car, but my other problems are much greater than a fire ext possibly flying around the cabin in that event. I'd rather be able to quickly "grab and go" with the extinguisher in the event of a fire, and not fumble with straps and so forth, nor mar my interior with brackets. The liklihood of needing to quickly grab the extinguisher is much greater than rolling the car

One argument for hard mounting it is for DEs. The tech inspection for the ones I've seen requires a fire extinguisher that is mounted 'metal to metal'.

The brackets shown in the picture above are quick release and *I think* use the existing holes from that mystery bracket that's there already not doing anything. No marring the interior, very slight delay to release the brackets, but zero chance of it wedging under the seat, rolling around, etc.

JMO. (I actually don't even have one but when I do, I think Sterling's answer is the best one)

I have a Brey Krause BR2016 and a 2.5lb Halon extinguisher in mine. Total was $230 and about 10min. to install.

It does limit the forward movement of the seat but who sits in the back anyway?

A newbie (i.e. dumb) question.

I've never had a fire extinguisher in my car. Do you guys have extinguishers in all your cars, or do you take that extra precaution with 928s because of those occasional gasoline smells that some owners have encountered from the hood area?

for me it's strictly a 928 thing. search the threads, lots of toasty sharks out there....Get Roger's (928Rus) fuel line hose replacement kit if you haven't already done so, and make it a priority DIY project (or get your mechanic to replace the lines)

I have a 2.5lb Amerex halon 1211 extinguisher and a Brey-Krause quick release (same as Sterlings) mine does not impede seat movement in any way - its attached to the movable seat rail with a custom bracket.

The B-K quick release is absolutely great ($$$) but their Porsche seat brackets are frankly rather stupid.

I do recommend you at least put a hose on the nozzle (w/ Halon) makes it much more versatile in use.

Alan

Oh and BTW I have 3 extinguishers in my truck: a small 1lb dry powder one right to hand and in the back a 2.5lb halon for me & mine and a 2.5lb dry powder for any other uses and backup... Primarily the extra 2.5lb one is for camping/general use - its cheap insurance. Its a lot easier to find a good mounting spot in a truck though - thats for sure.

I also have several more extinguishers to hand in my garage - including a 10lb foam unit. Be Prepared! (& yes I was a Boy Scout)

The fuel lines tend to get old and brittle on 20yo cars of any make or model. It is a good idea IMO to have one on any older car that you don't know the entire service history of. 45lbs of fuel line pressure over a hot manifold isn't a great thing. Better to be safe than sorry.
