Sean,
Did you verify that the gear selector is actually working - cable not broken?

The fact that both wheels turn when you rotate one tire only means the differential is okay. Also because you can spin the torque tube in all gears and the wheels don't turn too means the torque tube isn't connected to the transmission. Start dropping the torque tube. Whether it's the tube or the transmission the tube needs to come out (or at least be seperated from the tranny).
I'll be there Sunday (my next day off) if there is no work on the 928 we'll wire the A/C for the garage. Have you mounted/installed the A/C unit yet?

What Jim said. If the Torque Converter is attached to the torque tube, then it shouldn't spin no matter what gear it is in. You would be spinning the engine over on an auto, and that is not easy (obviously). Pull out the rubber plug out of the front of the torque converter housing (front of transmission) and make sure the bolts that hold the rear flex plate to the torque converter are still O.K. In other words, make sure the bolts are visibly O.K. and that the heads are not sheared off. If they are, we can us an easy out, and replace the bolts without dropping the torque tube. Wishfull thinking, but worth looking at before you start dropping the exhaust. There are six bolts total that hold the rear flex plate to the torque converter. Just use a socket on the crank or screw driver on the flywheel (be careful) to turn the engine over until you can see one of them. If even one is present, then this is not the problem.

I'll need the car exactly 31" off the ground. I need the interior of that garage to be exactly 71 degrees. Exactly. And one hot large pepparoni, onion, and mushroom pizza of your prefered brand waiting upon my arrival. And Beer. JK!!! Think Elf (the movie).
If we are both wrenching, we can have the TT out on the ground before the nightly news.

Ok, it is the TT.
I got the back 1/2 of the exhaust off and shields, pulled the plug and the TT snapped 1/8 from the pinch bolt/clamp. Header bolts are soaking in PB.
Better than a transmission problem.
On edit, sorry Mike, didn't see your posts until after I did this one. I knew the front of the TT was good, that was the only inspection point that I could get to before dropping the exhaust. Once I got that stuff out of the way, it was easy too look at the pinch bolt. I had already checked that flex plate and the bolts and they are A-Ok.

Was it ever in 4 cylinder mode? That seems to cause a vibration mode that breaks the S4 TTs very quickly; I thought the later models were stronger?
Your wife should spend more time on the bonnet dampening vibrations
Wish you luck & finding a cheap TT
