HVAC fan no workee.
 

Out driving my '83 S Euro yesterday and when I tried to put on the A/C, nothing happened. My model is one where to start the A/C you put the lower slider control on Auto and then move the temp lever to the left. I did this and then when I turned to knob to start the fan, nothing happened. I then tried to put on the defrost cycle because I knew that automatically causes the fan to go to maximum speed. Nothing happened when I did that. So, what do you suppose the problem might be? Fuse? Relay? or?

Yes, Yes, Maybe. In other words, check the fuse (#17) first. Then remove relay XXI and swap it for another "53", such as the horn relay (if your horn works). 90% of the time it's one of those items.

Also, check the 8A fuse #9 - if that fuse is dead, there is no juice to the controller.
My fan control died twice by taking out this fuse .... I believe that it was due to voltage spikes back to the controller when it actuating the AC compressor clutch.
The cure was to wire in a secondary relay by the hot start terminal to be closed by the hot wire to the AC clutch - that took the load off the control head, and never a problem since. Posted on this issue here

Thanks for the tips, turned out to be the #17 fuse. I changed it out and it's cool aqain. :)

Any thoughts on what would have made it blow?

On my 88 I had occasional blower failures..... it wouldn't do nothing...usually when I was very far from home on a very hot day (figures)...turned out to be a slow dying relay...

The bearing on the motor might be dry and partially seized. The fan cage might be loaded up with dust and debris. The motor case makes it hard to get to the motor shaft and squirt any lube on it, but you might have some fun trying that.
