Exclamation [EVENT] "Highway 58 Ramble" 4/7/02 - A Day of Driving with SOCAL928

Yes, it's time for another SOCAL928 Event announcement, so brace yourselves. Assuming you have recovered from our first Motor Mount Replacement Day on 3/31/02 (can you believe it?), join us for a full day of driving on Sunday, April 7th. I'm calling this the "Highway 58 Ramble."

At 9:30, we will head out from Sylmar up to Buttonwillow and across scenic and super-twisty Highway 58. After lunch, we will head BACK across 58 and then head south through the Los Padres Forest for still more twisties. When we're done, we'll have peeled off about 180 miles of twists and turns, burning and churning a total of 396 miles in all. We expect to land back at the Sylmar start point by 5:30 p.m. or so.

Can you handle it? Maybe you were expecting a civilized 5-mile wine and cheeze dash with your local PCA group, sniffing 356 exhaust fumes all day? Well, this is not your father's car club. Bring Dramamine for your passenger.

If you're interested in running with us, download the information packet, complete with detailed itinerary, maps and odometer-based "course notes" (see, we are not kidding!):

If you want to catch us for just part of the route, that works, too. Our timing should be pretty reliable. No RSVP necessary. Run what ya brung. Drive it as it was intended to be driven.

Interesting to note that the latest Motor Trend has a feature on the best roads in the country, by region, and lists a lot of this route in their description.

Karen & I have driven a lot of Dan's route in the 928, and even at the relatively casual rate necessitated by the right-seat klaxon, it was a great drive. Add in a few extra MPH and it will be a gas!

Folks anywhere near by should plan on attending. The company is great and the enthusiasm is top notch. Thanks Dan for doing all the pre-work on this event!

Hey there, Dr. B. I rushed out and bought that issue of MT last night after you posted your heads up. That's a pretty nice round up of the nation's roads they've got there. I wish I had had that handy for some of my trips to the midwest. I-40 ain't no fun.

The California roads I like, I discovered quite by accident in the 928, albeit they were happy accidents. Roaming around to satisfy the WanderLust is not a very efficient means of finding good driving roads...but in a 928, I find it time enjoyably spent.

In the course notes I advise people taking 101 south to stay away from Highway 166. That was one time where my random approach didn't quite work out. :-)

So, rereading the article, they also list the run into the back side of the Carmel Valley from 101 as a favorite. That's a stretch of twisties we discovered, on a lark, while touring to Devek Days in Aug 2000. IMHO, worth a second drive although it's only an hour or less each way. Maybe this year's tour should start earlier, do the coast sections towards Monterey, and do the Carmel Valley in both directions. We can end up in Monterey for the evening, do the aquarium tour on Friday morning for a look at the namesake fish before dashing up to Belmont for dinner.

Already scheming....
