928 ownership is unique...not everyone will understand it
My Son walks in last night and says, “I love my Porsche! Checkout what I just got for it”…and sets down what seems like a car cover.
Wife and I look at each other thinking “huh?”.
So my Son explains:
…as he gets in his car to leave Blockbuster, an older gentleman approaches and says, “Nice 928! Old Body. Looks really good.”
He’s feeling pretty cool with the attention, especially with his girlfriend sitting next to him , “Thank you. It’s an ’80, but only has about 60k.”
“Wow, runs very smooth”, the guy says. “Always loved these cars. I just sold my ’88 not too long ago.”
They talk a bit about the car and my son’s youth <18> as a 928 owner. Then the guy says he has a real nice car cover from his ’88, that he’d like to give to him. The guy hands him his phone number and then says, “You know, instead of waiting until tomorrow, I just live right up the street here…If you want to follow me, I’ll just open the garage door and grab it for you.”
So the guy walks out of his garage with the cover and says. “I’m really happy it’s going to a good home. BTW, I think I might have a couple oil filters too, if you want them.” “Sure!”
Comes back out with 3 Mahle oil filters and a never opened 3-wire O2 sensor. The car cover is a nice silver material with silk-screened ‘Porsche’ logo on the front and little mirror pockets.
Score!!
While talking about the experience, my Son pointed out how unique it was for some guy to just give stuff to a stranger, simply because he has an appreciation for the same unique car. Real comaraderie, and not likely to happen if it were just 911's or boxter's or corvette's for that matter, that you see all the time; not that there aren't cool owners with all sorts of cars, but 928's aren't too common and you sorta go out of your way for one another.
He loves his Shark!!

I bought my 928 (86S, red/black) this summer and I flew out of town five minutes after I wrote the check. I haven't driven it yet. I'm scouring the internet daily to find pictures so that I can look at my car. Flying back to my car in the middle of September. My girlfriend thinks I am weird.

Great story which I'm sure he will remember for the rest of his life.
Your girlfriend is just jealous because she doesn't have your undivided attention when you return!

My 928 gets 10 times the attention that my 996 gets. It gets 100% positive attention, where some people just think your a rich ***** in a porsche with the 996. The Porsche 928 is like no other car I have ever owned. It is special in everyway.

Thats a great story, your son will be a shark fan for life I'm sure!
My wife & I went on a "drive n dine" with our local PCA chapter Sat. evening. The local Corvette club was also invited. There were 53 cars total, about 50/50 between vettes & porsches. We drove about 2 hours through the back roads & small towns of southeastern rural Georgia to a nice restaurant on a river. Our cars were placed in the line as porsche/vette/porsche/vette, etc. to break things up. The wife & I each drove our sharks & we had the only 928s in the caravan. Our two sharks were about 10 cars apart.
More than once our sharks seemed to get special waves or pointing from people watching all the cars drive by along the way. One guy was standing out in front of his house with his three young kids. He specifically appeared to pay attention to two cars that that drove by, our 928s! We both saw the same thing, him holding his one young child with his two older ones by his side. As our sharks past by him, in between two corvettes, he immediately pointed out the 928, said something to his kids & waved enthusiastically.
Course I told my wife the next day when we were talking about the special shark attention that unfortunately, the guy was probably telling his kids, "look there goes a Ferarri!".
Also had some nice comments from some vette owners too. Especially when leaving the restaurant & I cranked mine up with the Xpipe & no cats. A couple of em came over to ask me about my shark. Was nice to represent.
