Thumbs up Question about exhaust system compatibility

Hi everyone,
Got a question. I'm fixing an '80 Euro S 5 speed, and I need an exhaust system. I have a chance to buy a good used factory system off of an '83 S US car with a 5 speed. It looks like it will bolt up. Will it fit?
My car doesn't have an O2 sensor but what the heck, it will just sit there keeping the system tight.
While we're on the subject, has anybody heard of actually powering up the O2 sensor with an external voltage, as a tune up method of setting the mixture on the CIS system, reading the voltage as a method of setting the mixture? How does the system work, like if you've got a volt meter on the output, what should you be looking for?
Thanks for the help, you guys are a great information source.

Hi Eric,
My recomendation is to fit a Y pipe to replace the cats and a cat back exhaust system.
I sell both if you are interested - contact me at Roger@928sRus.com

The stock Euro S exhaust is a dual system without cat and is better than a US system. Probably better to fix what you've got than to put in that one you can get.

What's wrong with it? What can you afford?

The next step-up would be 85-86 manifolds, a Y-pipe (or X-pipe) and a big sewer pipe to the rear.

The O2 sensor is a good idea. Plenty of places sell guages that covert the output to a bar graph or similar. Pretty cheap, too. Dig around for "wide band sensor."

With your car's CIS FI system the mixture can be easily adjusted so having a read-out is very useful. I take mine to a dyno and set it according to power readings and check the A/F action across RPMs. Hard to do that in the garage with a pressure guage set. I shoulda be getin me ona does.

Yes it will fit fine. Any A/F gauge will run the O2 sensor, however don't trust a $60 gauge to be accurate enough to set the CIS. Most Euro systems were butchered to add cats when they were federalized. So a stock Euro exhaust would be hard to find.

As mentioned above, might not cost much more for a good Y-pipe and new pipe back to the muffler. I run a single FM Delta 50 right off my Y-pipe with dual 2.5" pipes exiting in front of the rear tires. Short, sweet and simple. Sounds like a muscle car at idle, but distinctly german @ WOT.

Thanks for the replies.

GlenL: The car had been sitting for a number of years, and the front muffler and resonator have rusted out. The rear muffler is fine, as are the twin pipes running front to back. I would like to keep this original setup, but for now, just to pass inspection, I could put on this '83 system. I'm still playing with the CIS system, I'm having trouble with the motor reving up, I suspect the fuel distributor is still dirty, and contemplating attemping to rebuild it. Is there anything special about a Euro fuel distributor vs. US? If I have to buy a new one, will the US version work?

Thanks to all.

I was looking for a front muffler (if you mean that it has the Euro front muffler in lieu of the cats) for a while.

My car currently has 83 mainfolds to GT dual cats to 85 cat back comprised of Ansa center section and a Euro rear pot. Sounds great. Dave Lloyd at Musante is currently working on the manifold upgrade/retrofit so I'll have the 32V manifolds (and Motorsports spacer) on there. If time allows, I'm also going to an 86.5 system rear of the GT cats in order to be free of the crimp that the 85 dual pipe system has at the crossmember So, there are a lot of options.

Regarding the O2 sensor, I have one of the aftermarket guages driven by a Bosch sensor. I first had it mounted in an aftermarkt X pipe (OTT) and now in the GT cats. In my opinion, the narrowband sensor/guage arrangement isn't of much use at all. A wideband would be optimum, but they are costly and tend to have 'issues' if the car sits idle and the wideband sensor isn't cycled fairly regularly. AFR can be set pretty accurately using EGT readings, but only after you get a good baseline.
