Speedometer-Odometer/Cruise control
Hi everyone
first want to say hullo and introduce myself as a new member. Since a week I am the new owner of a ruby red '83 928S2 manual.
Now here is my problem/question: two days after I bought the car the speedometer/odometer stopped working; now from what I have read it could be the little gears in the instrument or an electrical/sensor problem. Now my point: since the cruise control doesn't work either (just the acceleration function) can I rule out the gears? I mean the cruise control probably gets the same signal from the sensor as the the speedo does and is not checking the speedo itself?
Best regards
Thomas

First, congrats on your car. Ruby red is beautiful color
The common gear failure is within in odometer, and shouldn't affect your speedo's performance. So yes, rule out the gear for now.
One of couple possible causes is a bad connection on the back of the instrument pod. If this is the case, removing the pod (see Nichols' site for a good write up on doing this) and cleaning the connections should take care of it.

I had the same problem with my '83s, and it came down to corrosion on the the printed circuit film that covers the back of the instrument pod.
The good news is: you can buy new one, and once you get your instrument pod out, they are easy to change.
Good luck and enjoy.

Hi
thank you all, the problem is already fixed. I removed the instrument pod and the speedometer itself. I could not see a connection which looked bad, but I sprayed them with contact spray anyway - and upon reassembly everything works again.
Best regards

Well done, and fast done!
IF the problems comes again, then check the connection from the front side to the back side of the printed circuit via the two rivet behind the Speedo.
I made good connection here by carefully soldering - Did that years ago and had no more problem with the Speedo.
The problem with the speed control is most properly the controller - Placed in front of the radio - I read somewhere that some had luck by re-soldering the printed board, but most properly you have to buy a new controller - That's a common problem due to 20 years old electronic!
PS: 54 Tiger 110 - I wish that was mine!

Hi Erik
in fact the cruise control works now as well. Somehow the signal from the speed sensor to the cruise control must be interrupted if the speedo doesn't work.
Best regards
Thomas
PS: here is a picture of the Triumph, yes they are hard to find, more difficult than a 928, and more expensive :-)

Hi Jessa
see that we might have almost identical cars! Same colour, both S2 manual. Mine was built in late 1983, but is clearly model year 1984, meanwhile I have several hints for that, comparing to specifications @ http://www.landsharkoz.com (like automatic hatch release, double distributor etc.), but also in the driver's handbook it says 'Ausgabe 1984' and 310 hp :-).
Cheers Thomas

Hi Thomas,
Thanks for the photos, - The bike looks extremely good, but must be newer than 54! Maybe you mean 64?
Yes you are right, the 928 don't cost mush in Switzerland - I bought my donor car there, nice red car with only 108,000 Km!

Hi Erik
you are right, the Triumph is model year 1960, but actually in my documents it says 1954, has to do with import/export, nothing too illegal though ... It was actually restored by Hugie Hancox*, somebody from Liechentstein had it restored by him to concours condition (but it also runs very well :-)) in 1985 but then never drove it, so I bought it in 1992 with 0 km.
Cheers Thomas

Hello Thomas
My 84 is doing the same thing.I lost the odometer and the speedo sticks. If I tap the pod lightly it will work.So it looks like I'll be pulling the pod apart too. Goodluck ...Bill
