Question I Need Gold Hose Clamps for Intake Sleeves

Hi Sharks:

I recently refinished my engine compartment including the intake & valve covers. I could not find enough of the original gold look - Cadmium finish, I think - hose clamps for the intake sleeves. I did parts in gold and black. I have all but 3 of the small ones, and 4 of the "medium" ones. Porsche now supplies stainless clamps. I have checked with the big three, and many others. I would be glad to pay retail in advance plus shipping for some of these - provided that you have them in hand.

I need:
(3) 999.512.349.02
(4) 999 512 350 02

Please email me, and I will arrange payment.

Thanks in Advance,

If you find a source, please post it! They look very cool on DR's Euro on the 928Spec site.

If you were to go to a plating shop and have these re-plated, what specification would you use to get that factory golden color? What would you tell them? Is it electroplated Zinc with a yellow dichromate conversion coat? Is it really Cadmium plate?

I'd like to plate some things in my engine bay, as I am not thrilled with the "buy all new" (a la Marc White) option. :-) Hi Marc!

Question

Sorry Guys,

I have no answers, only questions. What I do know is that Porsche no longer supplies em'. I think the process is not environmentally friendly. Now you need to refurb you own.

Time for a little good old-fashioned research for me, I definitely want to do some of this, perhaps this winter...I found a good plating source local to me, but that doesn't help out the rest of you folks. This place does, however, have a good website with lots of plating information. And they will still do Cadmium. (You're right Thom, Cadmium is now out of favor because of the environmentally unfriendly heavy metals used in the process.) They put all the stuff in a big drum and the entire process is automated. Worth a look:

I tried to find some info. on the web on the type of plating used in the 928. I could only find references to other Porsche models and "Type I" Cadmium plate. Probably safe to assume that that's what was used in the 928 engine bay? Apparently Cadmium is a heavy duty "marine" application, much better than Zinc (3x more durable, they say). No wonder Porsche chose to use it.

BTW, I saw an early shark with the fan bracket plated ("Zinc" according to the owner) and it looked pretty nice. Should we get crazy like those 356 guys and start plating every nut and bolt? :-)

Thom,
This may or may not work.
I used to get a interesting gold color using a 50% pickling solution of Chromic acid.
You have to experiment with the soaking or wipe and dry times and immaculate surfaces are the foundation for solid coating and uniformity.
