Default LCD Clock Replacement with VFT Display

My LCD clock was showing its age-the minutes digit would only show 5 or 6, so it wasn't very useful. I thought about an analog replacement, but really wanted to stay digital. I ordered an Odyssey Series I clock from Dakota Digital. It uses a modern and very bright VFT display, but the neat thing about it is the fact that the display itself is the exact size as the stock LCD. I removed the clock and white housing, saved the black bezel, made a backing plate of 16 gauge steel, dropped the entire Dakota Digital unit into it, placed the original black bezel/clear lens into the trim piece, and snapped everything back in. My poor photographic skills not withstanding, I'm very happy with the result (the glare in the photo is from he camera-the display itself is very sharp). The display only powers on when the ignition is on, and it dims automatically when the headlights are on. Unlike the LCD, the colon blinks while the display is on, so it looks more interesting. I used the blue filter that came with the new clock, but you could make the display any color you want by using a piece of colored transparent acrylic or film. Total cost was less than $100 and labor was about 3 hours.

The two small holes to the right give access to the hour and minute set buttons. The bottom one looks too low, but it's the angle of the camera.

This looks great, can you provide any more details on getting it hooked up to the power supply/lighting, for the electronically challenged among us?

That looks cool! It would be nice to rewire/rearrange the buttons so you don't have to drill.

Hmmm... replace the whole clock with a graphical display... programmable gauges...

Actually, the wiring is already there. I used the same ground (brown), and always on 12v connector the LCD used (red). The lead that went to the LCD's light bulb goes to the headlight switched lead (for dimming) on the Dakota Digital unit. The only additional lead needed is a 12v source switched by the ignition. For that, I tapped into the cigarette lighter hot lead, which is right next to the clock location. Couldn't have been easier. Here's a picture of the unit as it comes from the manufacturer. They actually have a lot of neat digital meters which could fit into the 928 console, with a little ingenuity and imagination.

Thanks for the more detailed description on the wiring, this sounds like something even I can handle. Maybe I'll hook up my stereo to the headlight switched lead as well!

If anyone wants thier LCD swapped out I can replace it with a unit that will look totaly stock, and eben include a LED so you'll never have to mess with it again. $65 plug and play. Just swap one unit for another. Takes about an hour to swap out.

OOPs. Sorry I though I was in the 944 forum.
There is a posibility that the LCD is the same, I'll check this out.

I have been thinking about this for awhile now.
Have a button to rotate it to volt meter, OPG (PSI), boost, knock counter, etc.

The TechEdge LA1 has 4 view modes. I have mine displaying AFR, boost, knock and RPM right now.
