Hi Everybody:

Driving back from the Frenzy I noticed a very low-frequency groan at highway speeds, back of the car, under power only (so not a wheel bearing, but it sounds a bit like a wheel bearing) not very noticeable, but it's there, no vibration. (Note: 86.5 Auto, 69K)

Whaddyya think?

I think any activity that causes groaning at highway speeds may be dangerous !

Ok, ok - perhaps it's a CV joint?

Place the rear of your car on stands under the rear control arms. Then let the car run in drive while you use an automotive stethescope to listen to each bearing. I had a similiar situation and quickly discovered a rear bearing was out. You can then probe around on the differential etc. Works great. Compare bearings if your not sure of the sound your looking for. Gary.

I often use a stethescope in my shop to diagnose noises, sometimes a wheel bearing noise can’t be heard unless you load them. Drive the car, when you hear the noise turn the steering wheel from side to side as if your going around cones, If the pitch of the noise changes it’s a wheel bearing.

Thanks for the replys. Steve, I can only just hear this groan at 70MPH+, and then it's pretty subtle, but I think it did increase going around a high-speed bend. But it does dissapear when you get off the throttle & come back when you get back on it.

I will try the stethescope.

The stethescope lets you hear if there is a difference btwn the two rear bearings. I agree load may be required as Steve has suggested, but most bad bearings can be detected with sound test, even without load.
