Default Quick ATF level question

Hello all!

I was wondering the WSM gives us the MAX level of ATF at cold transmission, but how would you define minimum level of the fluid? Is it the bottom of the reservoir or what?

Thanks!
Tommi.

there's two lines on the reservoir (at least on mine there is), that say high and low. It's molded into the plastic, so it's kind of hard to see somtimes. If mine gets down to the lower line, it will start missing gears.

Hello.

But aren´t those high and low levels for warm transmission.....?

What I´m looking for is that how much fluid I have to put in before driving it hot.... Now I have it like this:

- When engine not running, everything cold, the level is about 5mm over the HOT MIN level.

- When engine idling, gear lever in N, torque converter full, the level will drop about 10-15mm over the bottom of the reservoir.

Is it not enough or what...?

EDIT: sorry forgot to mention, car is 1988 928 S4 and the tank is shiny and clean. (and after draining the gearbox added about 7 litres of ATF, maybe a bit less since a little went on the floor )

Sorry, misunderstood. To the best of my knowledge (which is very limited), I don't think you can measure it cold.

WSM tells that it´s best to measure it cold, it would be more precise. But I cannot understand how it can be precise if they doesn´t provide minimum level....

there should be a min level on the sight gauge, it would be helpful for you to include the year your working on, as the early trans have a different fill bottle than the later on cars do but they both have min fill lines, its best to check the system when hot as this will give the system time to self bleed and have any air removed from the system, check on a level surface with the engine running in park with the E brake on , after you have run the shifter throught all of the selections

Like I edited my message above last night, it is MY 1988.

I think I´ll drive it to emission test at my friends service shop and then check the hot level....and while driving there observing how it change gears...

Tommi............there should be 3 marks on your auto tranny reservoir.

The bottom mark is 20C then there are the MIN and MAX marks which are the level marks to check when the tranny oil is hot, engine idling in neutral and the car on level ground.

The problem with filling cold is that there's only so much oil you can get in thereuntil you need to start the car and have the TC completely full as well as the transmission. Check on Tony's web site to see how he did it at home.

here's a picture page of the different reservoirs and a quick procedure.

http://jenniskens.livedsl.nl/Technic...5/MyTip598.htm

Obviously it is important for the tranny to avoid being low on ATF when the tranny is hot. And overfilling will make the tranny loose ATF when cold, and also risk rotating parts to rin in an oil bath which may cause foaming. So it must be reasonably right.... but it is not very critical.

regards,
Theo

Tommy since your working on a 88 you will find 3 level indications on the front portion of the ATF tank , clean this part off so you can read it, warm the car up and check the level as stated above, once you have the correct level the trans should not leak , the fluid will drain down into the pan if the car has been sitting but if the cap seal is good then you shouldnt have any leaks.

Level must be check with gear selector in Park or Neutral, with the engine running.
