wind up question

Once I read that an Audi racing saloon was queried about using a flat plane crank in a V8 that was supposed to be stock based. They responded that they just took the production 2 plane crank and flattened it in the forge.
Is this for real - feasible ? Practical?

If you get a chance, listen carefully to the next late model Lotus Esprit you see. You'll remark to yourself how much it sounds like a rice-rocket four cylinder motorcycle....those cars have a 3.5 liter V8 with a flat-plane crank. Supposedly this gives better breathing but more vibration.

Can this be done to a 928? Sure. It just involves designing and having constructed your own crankshaft....and camshafts!

As to whether Audi pressed a production crankshaft into a flat plane crank...this is possible. And it is possible that they just machined a production forging. I've heard that some cranks are made by taking a forged, flat plane billet and actually twisting it to get the requisite even-firing 928/American V8 crankshaft.
