Default Timing belt tensioner on 89 s4

Hi all,

The car im looking at buying 89s4 is due soon for a timing belt, waterpump job,
Now the dealers workshop report from where im buying it says it needs
a timing belt tensioner also.
My question is how do i know it needs a whole new tensioner and not just new rollers until we open it up??
Its a fair bit of money for a part i may not need.
The car has 155000ks and is well serviced and the timing belt
last done at 100000ks 6 yrs ago at the porsche dealer, the timing belt light has been coming on since then (PO told me). It was checked at 130000ks and all ok.
thanks for any help.

'morning Sam,

I'll let the more experienced wrenches here respond to the details of the post about the tensioner and TB, but for my money I would NOT buy a car from a guy that would drive 50k miles with the tensioner light on.

Just my .02.

you pretty much never need a new tensioner.....just rebuild yours is fine.....pretty much the only thing that fails is the rubber boot then it leaks out oil and doesn't work right.....but the shop could be trying to ring ya up for the $$$$ tensioner!!

So wait, that's like how many hectares? Sorry. Even in km that's a long way to drive with the TB light on.

For the kits: There is a tensioner rebuild kit. It may be part of the setup 928 spec puts together. I would also recommend new WP bolts and probably a thermostat since you'll be pulling the top rad hose too.

If tensioner was run dry for long time its inside teflon coating, bimetal washers and piston shaft can all be toast. Only way to be sure is to do thorough rebuild.

Unit,
If you are going to do your own repair/maintenance I would suggest that you contact Jim Morehouse and obtain copies of his technical CD's, excellent value at a very good price. They contain all that you will ever need to maintain your car. Jim is a member of Rennlist, so you can find his e-mail address on this forum, or put in a request to Jim via this forum.

do the job yourself, rebuilding the tensioner isn't hard or that expensive
while you're in there I would definately recommend replacing all the rollers and idlers and check the cam grears for wear..
pirtles site has a complete walk thru of the whole job

You don't. As Erkka descibed, the tensioned can get wrecked and need replacement, but there is no way to know until it is disassembled.
