crankshaft end play, wear?
 

hey guys, miss joann from maryland whom many of you met at the mountain event this last spring stopped in on her way to fla. and asked for some ac help and electrical help. when i drove her car in at the event i told her she needed motor mounts then and they were worse now. supported the engine dropped the crossmember and decided, well how bout this oil pan gasket while we are here. o.k. dropped the pan ordered overnite shipment from dave and jeanie for oil pan upgrade.
great, cool. everythings under control now. get the pan off lookin around and notice a slight bit of wear on housing of crank journel carrier. o.k. we got crank float going on here and its starting to attack the housing. what i would be wanting to know at this point is if the indication of this wear showing at the housing means the housing is trashed or still repairable with new thrust bearings? i have a core motor if i need to go there but would rather think its not to late. please iffin any of youall have been their please give some indication of what to expect. thanks in advance. btw. 24 years as a tech dont by any means say you seen it all. thanks joel

thanks donald, but after reading the info at that site, all good info i might add, i realized that the wear on this block is at the rearward block surface number one and secondly there is no indication of metals in the oil. no stalling, starter issues ever. just a nice machined surface look toward the rear of the housing. maybe somebody read the manual or the list post and pryed to hard on the flywheel toward the rear and locked it down in a pulled instance. thanks for all the help folks joel

by the way this is an 86 euro 928 auto.

FYI..
when i had the pan off my car a while back, it freaked me out to see all these wierd grooves in the block, perfect arcs! They are actually part of the machining in the block, dont be alarmed. (if we are talking of the same thing here, of course).if you look closely you should see that the wear could NEVER be made by some rotating assembly in the engine, the arcs dont macth the crank shaft rotation plane.
Best way to check is to check the play on the crank shaft with a dialmeter.

sorry not to get back sooner on this one, my thanks to tony and don. you were spot on tony. and don that site you mentioned is really very informative.at the end of a long hot day you pull an oil pan and see this pecular marking you have had enough. time to worry tomorro. ck end float and it was well within spec. have to give ms JoAnn credit, one very clean engine. thanks for your support also tib.
