So my engine is sitting on the cross member.
under the car today to replace the starter. While Im under there Im looking around and see my engine on my 85 is sitting on the cross member.
1. Will any harm come of me running it for the rest of the season and putting this job on the winter to-do list?
2. What kind of job am i looking at?
3. I take it this may be where my slight 5500 rpm vibe is coming from.
Thanks!
Kyle

Hey Kyle,
As a temporary fix you may put in this thing I read about. It's some kind of pad that goes in between the pan and the crossmember. I don't think it's supposed to be permanent, just enough to keep you going until you can get in there and do it right. If you do some searches on MMs you'll probably find it. I forget what it's called, anyone?
If it were me, I wouldn't want to drive it with the engine supported by the pan, but that's just me.

9k that I know of for mine. I don't like it but have yet to get a tech session going to get it done.
I think Nicole has a temp fix for this but can't remember and am not able to do a search as well as normal. Drinking here.

Also, you asked what kind of job are you in for: Sounds like an MM/pan gasket job. Lots of write-ups on this one. Time consuming, dirty, but not too tough.

The temp fix referred to is Jager's speed mount. 3 pieces of industrial neoprene. I had it in a for while. Some people say it makes a difference, I didn't really notice any difference, maybe because it doesn't do much until the neoprene warms up, so it's a gradual reduction in vibration.
Nothing like getting new mounts - then it felt like a new car.

Bad part is, when I told the wife the vibration would go away, I got a look of disappoitment. I hope that has no reflection on me.

2. About 8-10 hours of dirty, messy, icky work, but not difficult. Lot's of WYAIT jobs as mentioned. Pan gasket, general cleaning, etc. Can also be combined with TB/WP job, but the two don't overlap that much.
3. Yes.
Welcome!

In my ~4 years of posting here, browsing ebay/autotrader/craigslist/etc, I have not yet seen another Crystal Green Porsche of any model let alone another 928. But then again I haven't read every page of Chuck's 928 Registry. Yet.

The motor was just rebuilt not too long ago. It has no oil leaks and is very clean on the under side. What tools will make the job eaiser? Do I need an engine hoist?

They just rebuilt the motor and the mounts weren't replaced? That's a shame.
As mentioned, you could get an engine support from 928 Motorsports, or you could make one out of 4x4s and chain (Do some searches, there is much written about this).
If you've got a lift it will be MUCH easier, but you can do it on jackstands. I used an engine hoist to lift and hold it up while I did the MM/pan gasket job. If I didn't have to clean my way in and out it would have taken less time. The MM part of it shouldn't take more than 3 hours to pull the crossmember and another 3 to replace the MMs and put it back together (YMMV). You've got to move stuff like the steering rack, the swaybar and the starter to get in there, but I'm not sure how much of it is necessary if you're not going for the pan gasket.
For the specific MMs, there is much debate about whether to go with OEM liquid filled vs. aftermarket liquid filled vs. aftermarket solid. There is a HUGE difference in price. Definitely use the search for this one and form your own opinion.

You have a good point about the engine being rebuilt and the mounts not being replaced. But they are not on the work order.
Maybe Im worng. I didnt look super super super close. I was under there. and i tried to put my finger between the cross and the pan and my finger wouldn't fit, not even close, and it didnt feel like any room was there. Does anyone know how much room is to be there between the member and the pan?
