Post Upgrade From '86 to GTS Brakes

Hi all,

Here is my problem. I went shopping uninformed on the best Porsche ever built and bought one from a dealer out Bend, Oregon. I Know I Know!!! Anyway what I got was a 1986 ( no .5 here) that had been passed around through 6 different owners before it got to me.
What are my options? Anything like a RMB for MY or an upgrade kit to GTS Brakes or how bout them nice ceramic brakes on the new 911's.
How big of a wheel and tire set up can I stuff under my wheel wells.
And has anyone raced an auto with any success.

Shane,
Lovely weather you have up there.
Zee brakes.
Check the Greg nichols site - under brakes of course -. Upgrades is the last post.
http://nichols.nu/tips.htm save to favorites, a lot of stuff there!
Check the archives here. Go to search at the top of page, change date to all of last year or just 'all'.
Ed Ruiz and others had a lot to say , clearance /wheel changes may be necessary. Plenty of RMB posts, and on links or supporters Devek, 928 Parts International-order the catalog you'll wear it out- and 928 Specialists.
If you are after Nascar equivalant sound have em' drop the exhaust - unless they are willing to braze the thing together, no welding due to the Computer/ECU spike -. Then weld in a high flow performance Cat. ( or use your old one ) High flows go for under $60.00. then after removing the RM -save it for posterity- weld in the shorty, 15" Flowmaster, the in and out pipes on the 18" are *** backwards. This set up sounds good but is incredibly LOUD. Performance car people you don't know and may never meet WILL be talking about your sHARk with this install. You won't believe how powerful your car sounds.
Several bad points:
1. Loud after the fun factor wears off.
2. If you street race the competion will be aware of your sHARK's teeth - no suprise factor, now -.
3. The guy's with guns, and badges are now going to be onto you as well.
4. Some exhaust popping may become evident as you slow down/back-off the throttle. But, God does it sound good!
5. While mileage seems to go up, low end torque and a little mid range power -roll ons- drops a bit. Seems to improve, noticeably on top end.
6. Neighbors begin plotting against you.

I spent about $230.00 for parts and labor. 4 weeks later another $67.00 to add a Thrush pipe between the Cat. and Flowmaster it fit nicely into the tunnel. Still sounds good, not as loud.
Oh yeah this system is 2 1/2" pipe and there was some resonating metal noise in the pipe and a occasional sympathetic vibration in the car itself. All of which went away when I had the Thrush put on. I think it actually stiffened the system and canceled out the resonance/body rattle.
HTH

Thanks John,

A low throatty sound is just what I'm looking for. I have a '93 Mustang Cobra with this sound. That car goes the speed limit only, since it is bright red and the guys with the guns and badges notice it a lot. They haven't taken much notice of the Shark yet. Sleeper color maybe? As for my brakes I got to do something soon. The rotors are so worn, that there is no way I can have them turned. Not much Left of them, PO's.
Thanks again for your help. It looks like the big three will be getting a lot more business from me. Starting with the Shop manuals and belt tensioner.
