Question Need help on new wheels

Well, I'm only into my 2nd week of ownership & am thinking of replacing the "phonedials" on my car. Problem is, I've searched the archives & many other sites & can't find the basics on 928 wheels. I know mille miglia makes cup 1, 2, & 3 copies which I like, but they are substantially heavier than factory wheels. So I'm looking at used factory wheels, but don't know what will fit. So, the ?'s are...
--Do I only go for 7.5x17 & 9x17, or can I give or take a 1/2 inch in width if needed? (boxsterS has 7 & 8.5)
--Do all the wheels including the mille replicas require spacers of some type & how do you know which spacers to use? (apparently the GTS had 65mm on front & 55mm on rear, but also had 35mm spacers all around...is this what I'm trying to duplicate?)
-- What do you guys recommend for quality, price & performance overall?

Thanks for any help! <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />

Here's my $.02 worth on your questions:

1. You can give or take a little bit on your wheel widths, but the 2 things to keep in mind are: 1.) the tire and rim need to be the right size for each other, and 2.) Anything smaller than a 225 on the front and you're going with a smaller tire than original stock. In the case of the boxster wheels, a 17x7 wheel is really a little thin for a 225. Really should be more along the lines of a 205. However, I have seen people use a 205 on the front. Dunno how safe it is, but it has been done. You might talk to Skip in Boulder (http://www.skipsauls.net) as he did just what you've mentioned.

2. Most wheels do NOT require spacers. In fact, the problem is just the opposite. The difficulty is finding wheels with a high enough offset to be usable. Keep in mind that that the GTS's had flared rear quarter panels which allowed the wheels to be set further out. If your car is pre-92, you don't have these and so have considerably less fender lip clearance.

3. For excellent advice and quality service, try wheelenhancement.com. They sold me my AT Italia SPA's... (just put them on today.. looks like a new car now... woo hoo!). They specialize in Porsche wheels. Of course, there's always eBay as long as you know exactly what you want and are sure of what you're buying.

Hope this helps!
-Brian

Check this and the Nichols site for more info .
I think there is additional info thru Devek.
I believe you can 'see' the info at the Porsche Owners Club site, and of course 928 Parts International would be a great source of info call them or get their catalog as they list a number of wheel tire combo's (offsets included on a chart) and have flicks of the wheels, also sell spacers.
What are you planning to do with the phone dials?
I'm not sure of your year/model are they 15" or 16"?
Guru's... the Weissach model has , I believe, the first edition of the S model wheel 7x16" were they the only year that they were forged? the flicks I have seen of other year models seem to be stamped or cast - could be the flicks or my eyes -.
Some of the S models have chromed versions, yet I have heard repeatedly, that Porsche does not recommend chroming.
Does this apply to forgings? The other reason I'm curious about the 82 'm/y forgings is that if I send mine in for re-anodizing ( I let my son, Zack, do the walk arounds and start-up, he promptly, "CURBED" both right side wheels. My fault!) I would not be pleased to have a set of stamped/cast wheels returned as an exchange.
TIA

They all specialize in our cars and sell only wheels that will fit. Plenty of choices, just have to decide how much you want to spend$$$ I went with 18" cup replicas and Kuhmo rubber shipped to my door with center caps for @$1500.

Thanks for the replies, I'll check out those leads in the next day or 2.

John- my wheels are 16x7. I have no idea if they are forged. I'll probably just keep them so they can go to the next owner if I ever sell the car, unless someone offers me a nice sum.

9mil- You think I'm gonna go for a lil' 4-banger? You know I'm a V-8 freak.....

Your '85 Euro has phonedials on it? Not "flats"?

By the way, I was in Atlanta (Marietta) yesterday at Butler Tire getting some alignment/tire work done. After watching those Porsche flats spin as true as a lathe, I'm happy to stay with them. Smooth as silk.

Thumbs up

Jamie,
I AM interested , give me a figure, though it will have to wait till after I get 'THE BOOKS"
, I've had Pattycakes for a year - got the CD -
but, still no books.

Ron,
I like the flats as well but figure phone dials would be a nice change of pace. I need to re-anodize, and would like a set of chrome flats as well... Can't find those 'Woody Panels' though. Absolutely, lusting after Randy's polished/honed spyder. Get that emblem on yet, Randy?

Brian,
I am also considering the ATP SPA rims from wheelenhancement. THe only problem I have is that the sizes they offer are not as recommended by the big three. The rears would be 17x10 and the fronts I believe are 17x8. Does an 85 model shark have enough clearance in the fenders for these rims? I don't want the tire rubbing against it if I should hit a bump. Cold do some costly damage. Definitely would not be worth it just for appearance sake. How much did these rims set you back as there are no prices on the site. Post some pics if you can. I am interested to see other sharks with these rims on to help me make my decision. Thanks.
