Question shifts out of second too early and so on....

ok I finally got the chance to see what this baby can do...and i was disappointed.. my 944 NA felt a hell of a lot faster after 100-110 than this 928. reasons:

First of all, the car upsifted too quickly from second to third gear...at 4500 rpm. after that it shifted out of third at 4500 rpm again....

Is there a modification or a fix that will cause the 87 928 S4 to hold the gear longer like to 5500 rpm in 2nd and 3rd gears????? I saw one post about it but i didn't really understand it...the relay thing...there has to be a simpler way to make this car shift sooner... Does anyone know????

BTW: Mechanic friend of mine thats a Porsche Tech at the dealer checked out the car and he said its problem free after we did the 500 dollar belt thing...

I will let the experts explain the process but I just wanted to add that my S4 shifts at about 6600. It does not shift until it starts to leave the red. It will also downshift ( Kickdown ) anytime under 6000 RPMs - even to first.

The setup is so awesome that I actually prefer it to a manual. Running along at 45, I can use the kickdown and it will go to 2nd and hold it to about 75 bbbwwwaaaahhhhhhh

Euro S,
Scroll up to top of page.
Below and between 'POST TOPIC' and 'POST REPLY' is the word 'search'... click it.type in 'kickdown switch' wait, then read.
Also several posts at the Greg Nichols site.
For harder /longer shifts have you tried the 'T'-handle adjuster?
It seems as though your switch -under the gas pedal- is either broke or needs adjusting. There was a post on this topic in the last 5-6 days.
Take a look at the switch first, make sure the pedal is pushing the pressure switch when pedal is fully depressed. Make sure floor mats, beer cans , dead rodents aren't preventing pedal from reaching the witch and work from there.

The TV cable (Bowden cable) controls shift TIMING, EARLY OR LATE SHIFTS; the vacuum modulator controls shift FEEL HARD OR SOFT SHIFTS. It does this by controlling, the line pressure, (working pressure) in the transmission by way of a load input, vacuum. To make the trans shift later, make the TV cable tighter, no slack in the cable. A loose cable will give a soft and early shift. This cable is very sensitive to adjustments, so you will have to adjust, drive, adjust, and drive and so on till you get the right shift timing.
Adjust the throttle cable first (gas pedal cable). Adjust the ball on the cable so it goes on the pin with no slack in the cable.
Next adjust the control pressure cable (throttle valve cable). Adjust the ball on the cable so it goes on the pin with no slack in the cable
Check modulating and working pressure, low pressure will make the trans shift early.
If you still have stacked shifts, it is valve body related

Jerry, how is Dave doing, give him my regards.

my father tried to adjust the cables today...for some reason he said after tightening and loosening the nut, there was no difference in tension and had the same slack....am i missing something cuz believe me these cables do HAVE SLACK...

is there another area of adjustment or were we doing it wrong?

BTW: wheres' the TV Cable... theres' 4 of them, and the bottom two have lots of slack NOTE: The bottom cable farthest from the intake manifold has a torn rubber covering on it. Is that the one that needs to be adjusted????

Ok i had a look at Nichols' site. The cable with the rubber is the cruise control...ironic at the fact that it stopped working last night!!!!! But the accelerator cable has way too much slack!!!!! thats the culprit!

Thumbs up

STEVE,
Thanks, I just knew something had to be adjusted FIRST! You cleared that up.
Don't have this problem, but good stuff for future reference.

The nut is not the adjustment; you have to turn the ball on the end of the cable.

ok I made the adjustments to the kickdown cable. I got a lil more tension out of it, but i didn't even remove the ball joint part of it. I just loosened the tightening nut and turned the cable with some needle nose pliers (not the cable itself but the end part) and got rid of a lot of slack. I still have more thread to go, i took the car out and it was great!!!! it never shifted at 5000 rpm in third gear and i got up to 110 without even going to 4th!!!!!
