Default Wife broke my spare tire cover. ARRGH!

ARRRGH! My wife came out to garage yesterday to see how I was progressing on my latest home project. As she was walking past my workbench, she bumped into my original, pristine and extremely delicate spare tire cover which was sitting on top of a box. It fell to the ground and smashed to pieces. To add insult to injurt, she panicked and stepped on it, which broke it into even smaller pieces!

Has anyone fabricated a new one? What material did you use? I remember seeing replacements on E-Bay a while back, but I can't remember what they were made of. Since I'm sure I'll never enter a concours, I don't need an original cover anymore.

Thanks for listening to me rant...

They must have made them differently in '79, cause the one in my '87 seems pretty damn sturdy.

Arggh! That is brutal man.

This is the second wife did something to my 928 story that I have heard this week. Someone else described how their wife cracked the paint on their body colored wing. Ouch.

My wife, the first time she drove my '85 shortly after I got it, drove it about 10 miles with the emergency brake on! She noticed the red warning light on the dash and mentioned it to the kids, and they told her not to worry about it, that its on all the time, so she ignored it. WTF?!

Only when she got back in it did it occur to her to check the e-brake!

Then another time, my wifes friend sat her not tiny butt on the front fender of my '85. As politely as I could I asked her if she could not sit on my car since the fenders are aluminum and they dent easily. She thought I was kidding and continued to sit on it. I had to explain to her that I was not kidding.

She gave me the "you are a *****" look before removing her butt from my car.

I think most women just don't get it.

My wife doesn't get it either. She can't figure out why I love my car so much. But then again, this is coming from a woman who drove several miles to and from church one Sunday with the E-Brake on and completely ignored the plumes of smoke coming from the wheels when she stopped...

I guess women don't get the whole E-Brake thing, either!

Chris, the spare tire cover is made out of an extremely brittle corrigegated plastic that shatters if you even look at it the wong way. I'm hoping to make a new one if I can piece the old one together and trace the outline. Carl has some great stuff, but $67.00 for a piece pf plastic is kinda steep. I'd rather put that money into something else for the car...

I would absolutely NOT blame her. Those are made of 100% genuine moose droppings. It may have looked nice to you, but it had no actual function whatsoever. I'll prove it to you.

Replace it with a brand new one. Then, put all the covers and carpet etc back. Next, ask one of your kids, or you yourself, go sit on top of it.

Looks good, strong, cheap, and relatively easy.

That's just what I was looking for!

Has it held up ok? I was figuring I would go with either wood or plastic, but wood is probably a lot easier to work with.

Thanks for the tip!

It still looks perfect and is stonger than one may think. 1/4" birch is some pretty tuff stuff, and they sell it at lowes in varying small sheets like 2x2 and 4x4 so you dont have to buy a whole sheet of it. I just sanded it, stained it, and put on 4-6 coats of poly with a light sanding between coats. Also use cardboard to make a template then trace the template on the plywood. Good luck and hope it helps.
