S4 Brake line replacement
Well it's late Saturday night my 87 S4 is up in the air in my wife's parking space. Bought all my new parts to do new pads, rotors, sensors and new stock Porsche LINES. I am unsure in rear HOW to take off old brake line and manual not clear to me. Line is fixed with fittings both ends (ie, no swivel fittings). It appears you have to disconnect union of hard line with this rubber line then undo from caliper end. I am scared to undo connection to hard line since can't see how can GUARANTEE don't crossthread on replacement. Is the holder bracket at hard line junction a single piece or does it unbolt, etc. Real, real would appreciate specific step by step advice re this point ASAP.
Thanx,
Kevin

Kevin,
You basically have it figured out. The key to not damaging the soft/hard line meeting point is to counterhold it - one wrench on the nut on the rubber hose side, one wrench on the hardline nut.
You need to remove the retaining clips (assuming they are still there) first. If you clean the area a bit, you will see a piece of metal that is holding the end of the rubber line to the bracket.
This clip just pulls straight off. Grab the end of the clip that is closed, and pull out.
Once you have undone the rubber line at the hardline, you can remove the hose at the caliper.
Be sure to note the way the hose bends BEFORE you remove it. Then just make sure when you install the new hose, that it ends up with the same bend to it.
Reinstallation is reverse of removal.

Thanx, Greg.
I think I can see a very flat tab of metal (??retaining clip) behind (as look from wheel well) the line mounting plate holding the union of rubber to hard line. I will grip and pull out in the morning. The new line at the end that attaches to the hard line has a portion of the final circular metal fitting that is flattened as if it is to match a slot of similar shape. If sight down line it is a "D" shape not circular. That is what began my concerns as to how can I:
1. Attach new line tightly to caliper;
2. then be sure it is exactly aligned to fit this assumed cutout receiver ("slot" above) for the "D" shape at just the right rotation since is now fixed to caliper and can not rotate.
This is a big deal cuz if I screw up and crossthread (been there, done that) the line, the car will be stuck in garage til can order new parts (a week to get I assume) and my wife will..........
