Default Bypass Downtown L.A.!

Um, don't take I-5 through downtown LA coming from the north. As you come off the hill into the basin, look for 210 East signs. Use the 210 to go completely around Los Angeles. 210 has carpool lanes east from Pasadena. Follow 210 east to the 57 south, and arrive at the hotel and event with your senses and sensibilities intact. That drive through LA at almost any daylight hour is a real test of patience! Save maybe an hour too!

H - bring a car so you can take stuff back from my garage. All the stuff we talked about thats not really shipable.

Erik - An option if you are concerned about snow is to do an L through Houston or Dallas and pick up caravans there. Those guys are very active, and very mobile, and then you can take that great highway through west texas that has a "Starting point" speed limit of 80 in the day. ****, I was doing 90 in the tahoe with white knuckles and people were passing me. In tractors.

Hope to see you out here.

I also like Bill Swifts idea. When you take your way, you can come down the 15 quickly into Sandy instead of jutting over on the 10. Or if you take my way, you take 8 into San Diego anyway.

The Dallas way only adds about 400 miles anyway, and in the Tahoe, I made it from Chicago to Houston in 16 hours straight with gas. So you would easily get to Texarcana from GB in that time or way less. Just buy a V1 and good gas card.

Texarcana to Dallas is a straight shot, high speeds. I made the decision instead to go down to Houston that night from Texarcana and it was tough. Side roads, etc. speed traps 55 to 30 kind of stuff. But I got to an old college friends house that night and spent the morning catching up - it was great. I was supposed to see Sterling in Dallas, and TARCA to Dallas to Houston is supposed to be easier, but you don't do that, since its east.

Either way is great, but you have a better chance of a caravan if you go through the big D.

It is usually far better for those coming South on I -5 to bypass most of downtown LA by taking the 210 freeway skirting the mountains along Pasadena /Pomona and then the 57 south to Anaheim. The I-5 and 91 freeways are to be avoided when possible.

How about the Texas crew meets up with my group (so far two ) in north Texas versus us driving all the way down to Dallas?

I've been tossing around the idea of hitting San Diego first, then shoot north. Still on the fence about going to Vegas for a few days first.

It's looking like I'll be in San Diego for 3-4 days next February anyway.

Brenden just can't get any slack around here.

Eric, I think I owe you a couple of brews, that offer should really seal the deal for your plans to hit SD.

Brendan,

For you, the way to go might be 210e to 57s to 71s/e to 91e to 15 south. From our house in Glendale (a few miles north of the 5, and abou the same distance south of the 210) even Mapquest suggests that route to get south. 5 seems to loop to follow the coast in OC, while 15 is a less crowded ride most of the time. While it's very possible to make good time on the 5, all the stars need to be aligned perfectly to make good time for more than a few miles at a stretch.

Can we rent Keith a U-Haul so he can bring all the parts to his car down from Portland? I think he needs a little sunshine.

Hacker: When you get to the 10/57 junction, I'll join your caravan for the last 15 miles.

You Cali guys are REAL funny

I'd like to hit Vegas for a day, hang out loose some money & pick up Tony on the way through (or any over Vegas Sharkers)

I hope this actually happens - I've always wanted to do Route 66. Yes I know the old road is gone, just the idea of doing this drive is on my "before I die" list.
