Tackling the 3-piece spoiler on an OB
I picked up a cheap 3-piece spoiler in an attempt to install it on my non "s" 81'. After looking at it for hours and mocking it up it seems near impossible without spending a small fortune to do it right. I would like some opinions on possibly mounting just the center section and removing the upper runners on the hatch. I would remove material and form it to just the tail. This would eliminate all the mounting points to just the lower six. I would obviously have to have it painted but it might look alright. This is the picture that inspired me.

There are soo few nice smooth assed OB's left.
Different is not always better. I own one of each so I'm a tie

Because there simply isn't any cheap rear hatches around plus the cost of having it painted to match the car. At that point I might as well buy all the 1/4 window and hatch trim to mount everything.

When I got my '81 I was going to put a rear spoiler like on my '86.5. Discarded that choice and almost bought an s4 wing, but didn't. Now I am glad that worked out of my system and left it original. It just looks 'right' (just my opinion) What really helped the look are the 8" Phone dials for the rear.

Chewy,
I'm doing the same thing on my 79. Bought the front spoiler first since Roger here locally had one on the "realative Cheap). I'm doing this first as Brad W painted a new front bumper cap for me. The rear will come next and yes, the parts are friggin expensive. I like the aggressive look of the front and rear spoiler, and althogh it would be cheaper to go with the S4 rear, I want something that looks more like stock-ish. After the spoilers, I"m adding aero mirrors and new wheels and tires. Should look a lot more aggressive after I'm finished.
Some may say, why bugger up and OB that's pretty much bone stock? I say I'm enhancing it. It's not like I'm killing the value of an original musclecar, just making the way "I" want it.
Talk to Brad Webster from the DFW club. He repainted his entire 81 and added the front and rear spoilers. It looks great! Post anything you run into so we can learn. I always like having a guinea pig in front of me!!!!!
Good luck!

Chuck,
I agree with you. It may be a nice OB, but I will never sell it because it has been in my family since 1981 when my father purchased it. He passed it on to me 2 years before his death. I like the "s" and the way it looks and I don't see the problem with making it look the way I want it to. There will always be people who disagree. At the end of the day who cares what they think.
