Bicycle rack SUGGESTIONS NEEDED

I have a factory 928 ski rack, I need either the factory bicycle rack attachments or something aftermarket that will attach to the factory rack. Any suggestions would be appreciated. NO I will not put the bikes into the car.

H:

So this is like a Yakima roof rack, no? I'd be a little skittish about putting bikes on top of the car, especially if you have a sunroof. We do a boatload of cycling in our family and I don't really trust anything other than what attaches to a trailer hitch. The stability difference is huge.

I have used my factory crossbars with a Thule bike rack. It is the kind that you remove the front wheel and lock the bottom of the fork to the rack. The rear wheel is held onto the tray. It works fine, and there is no problem with the sunroof. However, the rear hatch only opens part way before hitting the back of the tray, I have been meaning to try it with the rack turned with the rear wheel sticking out over the windshield. Do you want me to get a model number?

Model number would be cool thanks Folding :) .... Chicago, the rack I have is a German one and yes I imagine not as stable as others. But I have to get bikes attached to the 928 somehow, and SOON! ... or risk driving a friggin SUV

H & co. in a friggin' SUV ?... I'd pay (little) $$$ to see that.

G'luck H.

p.s. I've got color photo prints for you.

Heinrich, I have the bike attachments. Will call you.

John Krawczyk 04-23-2007 06:37 PM

I fold down the seats and put mine in the back. Try that with a 911!

Fabio421 04-23-2007 06:44 PM

Call Tarek, he hauls all kinds of things on his 928.

Seriously, what about a rack that attaches at the back and clips inside the hatch?http://www.bikerackshops.com/images/...cks/AL102D.jpg

Fabio yes I hope to find one!! Macreel thanks, when and where :) -- I have a heater fan unit for you.

Based on what folding wing said, it sounds like it has the Thule standard rectangular bar. So you can use any Thule mount or those made my Rocky Mounts, which have some snazzy colors as well: http://www.rockymounts.com/

Heinrich,

I assume you will use the Porsche factory roof rack and you are still looking at the (factory or fabricated) bike attachment. This is what I researched in the past, but have not actually tried out some of these ideas....

1) The Yakima bike attachments will probably not work. Their bike attachments are designed to latch around the Yakima circular roof rack bars. Your Porsche roof rack has a rectangular cross-section.

2) Thule uses rectangular roof rack bars. It may be possible to retro-fit the mounting mechanism of their bike attachments to fit the Porsche roof rack:

http://www.performancebike.com/shop/...tegory_ID=4410

3) Performance Bike sells a brand of bike carrier products called XPORT (click on the link below and zoom in on the picture below). Their bike mounting mechanism "wraps" around the bars. You may be able to remove the original holding bracket and create one of your own to "wrap" around and mount to the Porsche roof rack bars.

4) Fabric suggested the Rocky Mounts. Good call. They also use a similar rectangular roof rack bar and "wrap around" mounting design for the bike attachments. Here is a close-up of their mounting bracket:

http://www.shoprockymounts.com/0705.html

5) The license plate bike mount is an interesting idea. I don't know if it will work on a 928 (i.e., structural foundation behind the 928 bumper, possible interference with the rear spoiler):

A few years ago, I was also looking for bike attachments. In the end, I weighed cost/benefits to the above retrofit solutions against the cost of my time for doing the modificaton work (I work in International Sales and travel extensively). I ended up purchasing the factory bike attachments. I believe it was around $180+ per bike attachment, not including shipping. The roof rack itself costs $600+.

You can borrow my brand new unused factory bike attachments which I purchased from 928 Specialists a few years ago for my 944s (944s and 928s share similar roof rack designs. The bike attachment is the same for both models and uses the same part number). I have two bike attachments. I can meet you halfway between Portland and Seattle on 1-5 or drop in on you if I happen to make a drive to Bremerton to visit with my mother-in-law. Can you PM me and let me know of the week that you will need it please?

P/S.
Re: transfer of the bike attachments to you. I will be travelling to Singapore in a few weeks. I will most likely be there for a couple of week before returning to Portland.

Interesting pics of someone modifying a Thule surf attachment to fit onto the factory rack:
