What's cheapest setup for dial indicator & stand for cam timing?
I'm thinking that timing my own cams may be something I want to learn...if the needed equipment price is right. Is there a reasonable (aka "cheap") source for the dial indicator and plans for making a stand to hold the dial?
I have the PorKen tool and that's served me well but I guess I'm just curious as to what happens under the cam tower.
Also, is the WSM the best place for instructions on how to do this?
I've not decided to do this yet...but I'm seriously tossing the idea around. I mean, if I'm going to own a 928 the rest of my life, I might as well get intimate with it, right? Getting the cam tower cover off must be half the work.

Dial indicator
I made my own from a harbour freight dial indicator, and I cut my own base out of plate steel. See pic. I bought the magnetic base dial indicator from HF, and threw the magnet part away. I then made my own dial indicator "extension" with the bent leg and rounded the end off that touches the tappet. I used one of the cam cover bolts with a washer to bolt it into place.
I think I still have the cad drawing of the base peice that I made. We have an automated plasma cutter here at work, which made quick work of the base peice. But you can make it with a grinder with a cutting wheel. Just drill the hole and cut out the slot before you cut the outer shape.
I used a piece of coat hanger for the dial indicator extension peice and epoxy'd this into the end of the dial indicator.
Pretty crude, but it works.

Killav,
I've printed off the fotos (little hard to make out the detail) and just got through ordering the following items from Harbor Freight.
Dial indicator #33675-OVGA $13.99
Multi Position Magnetic Base with Fine Adjustment # 5645-OVGA $17.99
Shipping $7.99
Total $39.97
Now to make a base.
Thanks!
