Default Just bought euro motor, what have I got?

I have been waiting for something like this to come up for a while and when it did I just hit the trigger.

Ebay item 280101958851.. I'm too busy bouncing up and down to remember how to do the link correctly.

It is shown as a complete '80 euro motor. It looks like it from the photos as I see the big intake runners and the single dist.

Can anybody point me to spec's on this thing? I think it is close to 300hp, but not sure of the details.

Does anybody know what the correct serial number range for the motor would be? I am hoping (and hopping) to pick it up over the weekend or on monday, and would like to double check that it is what I think it is. (could just be a US motor with a euro intake, at this point)

~300hp/265ftlb from the factory. It was at least partially federalized with a smog pump. I don't know enough about identifying CIS motors to tell you if the seller is full of it about year and Euro. Although the pipe on the back of the heads was a Euro only part, IIRC.

Default Euro Engine Info

How can you tell whether it is 4.5 or 4.7, as I think both were made in '80?

928gt.com lists it as M28/11 or M28/12 depending on whether it came from an auto or manual

The link http://www.928gt.com/popup.aspx?src=...ginenumber.JPG also shows where to look.

I was assuming Karl hasn't got his hands on it yet to check the engine number, so is there any way of telling which it is from the pics?

The US 16 valve motors and 4.5 euro motors have smaller diameter intake runners. The difference is subtle, but I recently bought a set of the euro runners and have been polishing them to put on my 4.5 motor so I can spot that these are they. I think I see the vacume tap for an auto transmission. It has the screw in plugs rather than the rubber plugs for the fastner holes in the cam carriers, so it is not a '78 at least. I don't know if they ran the rubber plugs in '79....

Karl you have got a 4.7 litre Euro motor there, you can tell by the intake manifold and this are great to modify and you will get really good power from them. Looks like it could do with some maintaince, maybe do a leakdown to determine how far you go with it.

Good Luck

According to my Models, Dimensions and Tolerances handbook, Stan is right and it should be M28.11 or M28.12.

Greg, I agree a leak down is a good place to start. I just bought a leak down test set and was about to do that to my 4.5. It is pouring oil out of the cam covers (again) and I was wondering if it was worth screwing with. Only problem is: shouldn't I do the leakdown with the motor warm? Does that make a difference?

These are the same guys that are selling the 5-speed comversion "kit" on another auction. What are the chances that this engine and all the 5-speed stuff came out of the same car?.

Hi, this is my first post, but I thought you should know. I actually emailed the guy about this engine because I didn't believe it was a euro. He replied that the engine stamp was M28/03. So... it is an early model (77-79) 4.5l 219hp I believe (according to info at 928gt website)

Hi dugee,
Thanks for the input. I heard from someone else via ebay that the guy had said this was a .03. I don't know what the deal is yet, but I am pretty sure the motor in the picture is not that, unless it is a miss-mash of parts. I have a '78 euro motor right now which is a .05 and it has the rubber plugs on the upper cam carrier fastner covers and the small intake runners. With the metal plugs I am pretty sure it should be something above .05. If it is an '80 euro as he claims then it should either be a .09/.10 (240hp) or a .11/.12 (300hp). I would be ok with either result (although the bin price was high for a .09, I think). The motor is quite close to me, so I will be dropping by in a few hours to inspect.

I think it is a good price if it is a Euro S motor in good condition. I think any other 16v 928 motor can be obtained inexpensively.
