Ethanol Burning 928
Hi all,
I was talking to a friend recently and had read somethings on ethanol or the new E85 we have in the states, and I got to thinking. Could a 928 be run on Ethanol? I know you have to run higher compression and anything that touches the ethanol fuel needs to be non-corrosive. Is it possible? What else would you have to do?
The reason I'm curious is because I saw a little clip about a Lotus Exige 265E which is tuned to run only E85(not "Flexfuel" crap) and produces 265hp and thats only with the fuel change. Thats a 45hp increase over the 220hp the Exige S normally makes. Am I wrong to think it could be done and with possibly better results than the Exige?

Will the car run - yes
Will you end up melting all non metal fuel lines? - yes
The Lotus I would guess has a way to tell what kind of fuel has been added (or a switch) that cranks up the timing for the extra power.

As I mentioned anything that touches the ethanol needs to be not corrosive. From what I read and saw in the film clip they changed the timing with a computer. I'm not that on top of it bu here is a link

There are rubber hoses (at least they look like some kind of rubber) designed to handle ethanol. So a 928 could be converted over. I've given it some thought, with a supercharged car it would be great to run the extra octain.

That is very true, and I've heard reports of E85 running as high as 139 octane!! Not sure if thats sound info though. I've also heard that high ethanol fuel runs cooler than regular gas, but thats word of mouth as well.

Umm I think someone said once that Ethanol will MELT a 928 plastic fuel tank....plus various fuel hoses...I dont think I will be trying it soon lol

Alcohol does run cooler in an engine. Think of the difference in feeling between pouring gas on your one hand, and isopropyl alcohol on the other. The hand with alcohol on it will feel much colder. That's exactly how it works for the engine as well. The alcohol better cools in the incoming charge of air. That is partly offset by the amount of air displaced by the larger volume of alcohol required vs gasoline. Alcohol is less dense so you have to inject more of it. However, it does carry some oxygen with it, and has an octane number in the low 100s. It's especially well suited to highly boosted engines.
