Unfortunately that's a drop-the-rear suspension, transmission, clutch, and torque tube kind of repair. Unless you want to Kibort it and cut a foot long access hole in the top of your transmission tunnel.

WSM confirms spring is attached to the top cover of the trans. do I REALLY need to do all that to take the top cover off?
no interest in doing any cutting!! there has got to be a way to slightly drop the trans and get to all the bolts on the top cover!??
is this a MUST repair? shifter feels great and no issues to report: will something get worse if I don't repair now?

Burning Brakes
Can anyone confirm whether this can be done in situ -- and if so how? Erkka (above) commented that it might be possible to replace by dropping the trans a little, but nobody seems to have actually done it. If you have successfully done this -- or alternately can confirm that this is NOT possible -- please let us all know!

I think the danger lies in having the top of the trans open and the potential for even a tiny bit of debris flaking
from the body of the car, or part of the original gasket getting inside. but I think there would be a way to get
the cover off with trans in place
I ordered the spring and gasket from Roger, but decided to wait on the repair so I wouldn't worry about any
loose rubbish falling in the trans.
