I always liked the ZR1 better than normal vettes.....mostly for the 32V 4 cam motor....that is very similar to our engines... Everyone has some great comments....but try this one.....see if you can drive both cars in the same day......that will answer ALL of your questions!

I recently sold a 1987 928, and now have a C4 vette that I won't keep long. My philosophy is to own both, and sell them when you get tired of them. This means that I have to shop a little more, and accept less than perfect cars. To me it's all about the driving experience, so the color matters very little.

My vette is so cheap that you could still afford a GTS, so I know you can find one in your area for a similar price. A GTS, however, is much harder to find.

See the below page from a 1990 review of the 928GT. They also list the ZR-1 spec for comparison. It is a little hard to read but generally the ZR1 does everything a little better than the 1990 928 GT

Better accel
Better price
Better braking
Better skidpad
Better gas mileage

I knew all this before I bought my last car, I bought the GT

How'd the pld joke go...
What's the difference between a porcupine and a Corvette... on porcupine the ***** is on the outside.

Chuck
Great article!

5.2 0-60 with a 13.7 1/4 @104mph is still very quick! 169mph isn't to shabby niether.....of course the ZR1 beats all of these numbers by a touch....but an X-pipe would fix that!

I have ridden in 2 different Z06's and no ZR-1's but I can tell you that the ZO6's thrust was spectacular. One of the ZO6's I rode in was at a track day sponsored by our local Corvette club. This car was bone stock with the exception of four slicks bolted on to the car. The traction and acceleration (with the slicks) were mind numbing.

Now back to the original topic. I would go with the 928. Yea, the ZR-1 is faster but so what. Unless you are pushing the car to 9/10ths all of the time, the performance advantage becomes mute. If you are just cruising around, what interior would you rather be wrapped in? What body lines stir your emotions more? My best friend owns a white 2000 Corvette coupe with a 383 stroker under the hood. It will flat out smoke my car on the track and at the dragstrip. But when we drive around or park, my car garners more attention and double takes from passing drivers. And believe me, this is one sweet vette that has been lowered and rides on 19's and 20's. Both cars will no doubt give you great pleasure in ownership. Pick your poison. I think you should drop a ZR-1 motor into the GT and go have some fun.

As we all know, #'s don't tell the whole story. Which car do you want to live with day to day? I would also look at it from the point of view that how comfortable would you be on a 600 mile trip, for instance? There are many things to consider besides statistical performance data.

$24k is pretty cheap for a 25k mile ZR-1. I have seen them with 125k and still fetch low teens so rsale is great on them as well. Is the GT auto or stick because all zr-1's are 6spd so if you want the auto, no comparison. I have both a vette and a 928 and the 928 is a superior car but the vette is an absolute animal. You might also wnt to check out insurance on both, that ZR-1 might be expensive, then again it might be cheap.

He's right though, the best value for any 928 purchase is the 86.5. The looks, HP, etc., etc. isn't all that significantly different froim any of them and for the savings you can economically make it into a REAL FAST CAR!! From the purely practical standpoint...the 86.5 has to be the best of the whole 928 bunch.

Vette? Everybody has one. Plus you need to keep a dentist on retainer to keep the jarred fillings in your teeth.

It looks almost similar to the 928 832V

I would love to see pix of the two side by side with measurements, including weight.

Thank you for your input I drove both cars today, during a rain break, the vette is a monster period. mechanically superior trans(smooth shifts), engine(pulls and pulls) etc, the porsche is more refined and to be honest I think if I decide on another 928 I will purchase another 1990 s4 auto. Resale and value I lean toward the vette, the zr1 is not like any other c4,or c5 and the z06 is nice but no resale. But like the rest of us I like 928s----- but that zr1 is a monster,---- thanks guys half the fun is the hunt, and if you get the chance, drive a zr1, mechanically its what the 928 should have been.

Its easy to get vette power in a 928, but not much you can do to a vette to make it like a 928.

Vettes just don't float my boat.

This is more of a temptation to me.

If I ever have $20g lying around I'll drop a "black widow" ZR1 engine (500hp, worked over by Mecury Marine performance devison, I know two guys with ZR1's with this treatement) into a 928.

George Suennen scanned a June '89 Automobile magazine article pitting a ZR-1 vs. a 928GT.

A guy that I work with is into his 6th vette. He loves them. He just bought an '05 with 1,200 miles on the clock to be his daily driver so he doesn't have to drive his M5 Bimmer. Lots of cool goodies in that car. He's been tempted by the Porsche...but hasn't taken the plunge yet since he's having so much fun. I keep telling him he needs some refinement.
