TDC mark of 16v
Trying to align the cams. Which mark on the crank dampner should the pointer point to?

#2, that's what I alway thought and the manual pg 15-14 kinda shows the line.
Chilton's manual pg 47 illustrates alignment to #3, the "T".
Today I dial indicated #1 piston and it lines up perfect with the "T".
So all these years have I been retarding the cams? Or is my crank dampner off?
BTW either position I set the crank it does not align the cams.

It probably won't align perfectly, unless you get the PorKen 16v adjustable cam sprocket kit. If you're within 1/2 tooth on the belt, that's as good as it gets with original parts.

That's about 2° crank, or 4° cam retard!

I know Porken I'm almost about to mail you, have any kits laying around?. Just don't get why the HTD T Belt won't align. Porsche says it's a factory upgrade.

I think he was talking about TDC being at the T not the line, based on micrometer measurements of the piston being at TDC, right? if thats the case, we all are 4 degrees advanced , right? or it means that if we use the T mark, the timing will be 4 degrees retarded for how most of us have set things.

Using a dial indicator on a noncompressed piston will get you close but not exact. The center line (#2) indicates TDC like the line between the 1 and 0 indicates 10 degrees.

The PIC above is only for reference. It's not my actual valve timing line up.
On my 16v the piston is still moving upwards at the "Line", between 0 and T.
Only at the "T" is piston at TDC.

i wonder how this is possible. I seem to remember measuring the piston position when scots engine was apart. we had shaved the block and were measuring how much pased the block the piston went to calculate CCs for compression ratio. i put on the harmonic balancer and it was dead nuts on.
I wonder how it could be anything other than accurate. harmonic balancer marks off? keyway on the crank.

The Chilton manual is only showing where the 928 timing marks are, versus the 924, where the marks are viewed through the clutch housing. Also, the section is about ignition timing.
