I'm lost.........If your old pump has the boss on it, and if the one you ordered is identical to it, then you have the right water pump......unless I'm missing something, which is very possible.

Yes, you've completely missed my incompetence at describing the situation clearly.

To clarify, I thought the WPs were the same, but didn't look at the boss. They were not. The newer one was without the boss, the older had the boss.

Anyway, thanks to all for the help. It's sorted out now.

Ive gone through this twice. the holbert car has the 84 style (with Boss) pump , but when i ordered the part for the first fatal swap, i called out for a 87 or at least a late 86. turns out, it was the older style. however, i have all the timing belt sensor stuff and the later tensioner. I cant even rember what i have now. Scots 82 part euro was even worse, he had an s4 pump, with earlier tensioner arm. the tensioner didnt line up correctly. when i finally found out what we had (thanks list) i didnt want to exchange the water pump, or get a new tensioner arm and roller, we just got the right tensioner. but now the covers didnt fit properly, and the dipstick was totally in the way. 2 racer mods later, and he had a part flexible oil dip stick tube and some tweeked covers! (that part i do remember on his)

two differnt pumps, different arms, different rollers. its easy to get confused here, unless you do this for a living like Greg.

OK. Here's a good question, while we are on this subject:

Has anybody ever seen an original '86 with the late style parts like PET indicates they have? I know I have not and I've seen a few.....

I've only had one '86.5 apart, and it was a 'half-hybrid' between a late 16v and a S4 .... the pump with boss and pivot bolt was 16v type, the tensioner had two caliper style bleeders vs the earlier cap screws, the tensioner body had the +8mm offset of the S4 unit ( ot match its centerline to that of the TB), and the carrier arm had the matching offset to receive the piston rod - but the idler (#6004) still sat on the boss with its bushing .... which reversed on the S4 with the idler mounted to the arm.
