Someone must have encountered this one before. T Colvin and I are working on his WP/TB today. A water pump bolt sheared off last night, even after the liberal use of PB Blaster. We drilled into it, inserted the extractor, and the extractor sheared off.

What next? How do you get the extractor and the bolt out?

Try some heat with a torch.

Too bad you broke the head off the bolt. Most stuck bolts can be worked loose by incrementally tightening and loosening. But you need to feel that bolt is getting stuck before you exceed the shearing torque the bolt; that's where the experienced mechanic will usually stop.

Do either of you have welding experience? If a nut or bolt can be tacked onto the extractor, you would then have something to turn, and applying heat to the area may then be enough to get the original bolt broken free.

How cold it there?

Try some heat from a propane torch to get the area expanded.

7 out of ten of my WP bolts snapped. Keith used Vice grips to get the studs out except for one and the same happened as you describe. Ended up having to drill around it and then using a heli-coil.

Be sure to use anti-seize to prevent this next time.

It's probably about 60 in the garage. A nice day, actually. A great day to be out doing something else, like driving the 928.

I think that is the same one I had issues with. Keith struggled for hours on that before getting it out. I don't envy you.

Does the extractor move at all or is it tight ?

Extractor is tight. It is countersunk into the bolt.

Haven't others used left hand drill bits or something like that? I know the broken easyout will make that difficult though.

Second vote for left hand drill bits. Dremel with diamond bit might eat into extractor remains but it takes time and many bits to get even small piece out.

Try heating as scotsman suggested and tap in the opposite direction with small punch. Not having a mig it will be time consuming. I have been able to shatter broken taps and extractors, they are brittle.
