yeah i think i may get one. I saw some stuff on ebay that looks pretty good.

I actually have one for jewelry, its basket is only 2.5" x 2.5" but i am going to try it out and see if it works.

I like this ultrasonic as he cleaning solution is just water and simple green. I hate having to buy exotic stuff that you have to order, or go to the ends of the earth to find. Not to mention water is nearly free and simple green is pretty cheap.

The ones that someone posted a link to, 1) wont fit a cylinder head as i think the length is 24", but the price i think you saw was for the basket at like $180, the actual unit was $1,700 OUCH!

I am trying to think of the largest thing i would possibly put in it and get a size to accomidate that.

Hacker,

What media do you use when bead blasting heads, do you use walnut shells?

Ryan,
I started with my wifes jewelery cleaner and it is pretty useless when compared to the industrial type ultrasonic.

Yeah,

i have come to the same conclusion after 20 minutes. LOL

I wish i could see Robs pics, i am curious to see what they look like. Do things come out looking like new after just 4 minutes?

Can you clean pistons with this or does it not remove the things that need to be scrubbed off, such as baked on carbon and such.

That cap looks like new.

As for the bolts will the ultrasonic have a black, oil and grease covered bolt coming out shiny and new after just a few minutes?

Whatever Jim Page has in his blaster when I sneak into the back room of his shop....

Not sure, some kind of white media. I do not (due to the recomentation of a local 928 engine builder) blast heads. To many places to wash out the media you might miss. Reason why I was asking about cleaning them this way.

thanks, that makes sense, i was considering having mine done to make the casting look like new but i agree, too much crap to clean out once you do that.

I will stick with a solvent and a brass bristle brush.

Ultrasonic will get the carbon deposits given enough time and the right solvent. Try alternating between acetone and deionized water(drying between each). Also, be sure you have something between the head and the inside of the cleaner, or it will erode in spots. Same concern with other precision parts, hardware is fine but it will erode marks into the inside of the cleaner. They make little waffle-like plastic trays for this. I used to use them a lot, and we would place parts into large beakers and set them on the plastic tray inside the tank. Leave some water in the cleaner to conduct the sound waves into the beaker, that way you don't crap up the ultrasonic unit and you can clean different batches of parts with different solvents at the same time. They usually recommend you don't use ultrasonic cleaners with flammable liquids, but covered containers of acetone ride it out just fine. A big enough cleaner for a head is $$$... good luck on the deal hunt.
