20 year old MAF should be replaced even if it seems to work.
For every 1% that the MAF is aged you lose about 2% to 3% of your HP; a 20 year old MAF could easily be costing you 40 or 50 HP.

Just to clarify shipping time to John in the UK.
I have ordered various items from John and they have been with me in 2 days.
The only other place I get that fast a service is 928Int.
Most other places in the States take 5 to 10 days.

Shotgun trouble shooting may not be the best way, but if you can shoot the shotgun yourself it may not be the most expensive either. 20 year old MAF should be replaced even if it seems to work.

Isn't that the "Pinnacle Peak" steakhouse? One in Arizona on Pinnacle Peak and the one in OC on Trask? Used to be on Beach in the rundown-looking wood building (that burned down).

Yes, that is the one.

There is such a place near the Broomfield CO MAF rebuilder, called the Trail Dust, it is a small chain, one of several in TX and CO. Yes, they will cut your tie off but they (at least used to) give you a free drink for it. Fun way to get rid of an old tie. I do not recall the food being noteworthy, this is more of a tourist type place.

Losing 40-50HP from an aged MAF? Hmm. I should get mine rebuilt.

Every town has some cowboy restaurant where they cut off your tie. I remember the Pinnacle Peak in OC; my parents used to go and leave me at home with Mac and Cheese.

Arizona has one where you go down a slide into the restaurant. Here in Colorado, there are a few but the chain I am aware of is Trail Dust, which has a neon tie on the sign. They, like all of them, cut off your tie.

You had pets? I guess Mac was a dog but what was cheese??

Marton
I think the recommended time to change the MAF is when it is 3% or 4% aged so when you are only about 25/30 HP down but there much worse ones out there

Mac was my private bodyguard. I can no longer remember what cheese was. Maybe a girl?

I now cant get ahold of Kevin at injection. (sorry enough BBQ talk)

I checked my UPS tracking number and it comes back with this "THE RECEIVER HAS MOVED. UPS ATTEMPTING TO LOCATE RECEIVER TO COMPLETE DELIVERY, NO DELIVERY WAS MADE"

Whats up with that? I doublechecked the address. Would you get that message if a signature was needed and it wasnt given. Its odd, i now cant get ahold of the guy (tried 3 times today) and the package is undeliverable.

Glad we could all share our Peak experiences....

Lazy Dog is a chain also isn't it, one on Beach Blvd I was told it is owned by some restaurant persons son or something like that. Grilled fish tacos from them are decent.

On the Border, another chain restaurant has BBQ Brisket tacos that are as good as they sound.

Can't wait til I get a MAF so I can have it rebuilt.

I just spoke to Kevin, and also to UPS. I think he has a lazy driver on his route. The address is correct and I asked that the driver try and deliver it again today. So it should be there shortly. We will see. (for those interested in BREAKING NEWS!!!!)

As to what they provide. They do the testing for free on their flow bench. If its out of spec it can either be recalibrated (price unknown) or for $150 completely rebuilt with among other things the wire being replaced. If they are rebuilt, they include a Lifetime Warranty as well.

For those that asked whats included, there you have it.

When someone says an out of tune MAF can be good for -30HP, i find that hard to believe, but I am anxious to get it back and drive the car again.

Cheers

I'm going to drive mine up to them on Friday afternoon, then, in 5 degree weather. Sounds like a great deal and I will see what my experience is. This winter is a great time to do projects that disable the car.

Peter F, you're recollection of the Trail Dust is about the same as mine. Yes, there is one in Westminster, but the decrepit Westminster Mall, but there are others all over.

OK Ryan, thanks for the info.

Power loss vs MAF ageing. My calcs, assuming the car is set for optimum A/F ratio for max power as standard at WOT - MAF aged 4.6%; power loss 10% (say 30HP). MAF aged 6.4%, power loss 20%.

As standard a 928 generally runs on the rich side at WOT, so the power drop won't be a bad as those figures, but I do see lots of MAFs at 5 -10% aged.

WOW

who knew

Good number John, if anyone would know it would be you. I thought it hard to believe that power can suffer so much but if the air reading is incirrect then the fueling would be incorrect as well and well......you have a significant power loss.
