928 S4 prices
 

I am wondering about the 928 S4 prices and wanted to know if this car is fully depreciated or if prices still have room to drop. What does the market look like for these cars?

From what I have seen the prices for good examples are going up slowly.

Prices for good examples hold, prices drop for poorly maintained examples but ultimately 928's are worth whatever you're willing to pay for them.

Seems the good examples are harder and harder to come by and tend to demand higher prices. The market for the better examples also appears to be strong from what I can tell. Mileage is not as much of a factor as overall condition and maintenance completed.

Yeah,it seems to me, too, that prices have been holding pretty steady, with good examples bringing a hefty premium. There seems to be little fine tuning of price based on mileage, except for those with exceptionally low mileage. A well maintained, good condition S4 is worth the same today what it was two years ago, it seems.

It's difficult to map, because the actual purchase price of a specialty used car is often only known by only the buyer and seller, but my overall impression of the 928 market (having been steadily browsing ebay, Rennlist, and various advert sites for a couple of years now) is that it is actually appreciating a bit for fine examples of the S4.

We can't overstress the importance of quality in this though. Poorly maintained cars populate the low end (and the bottom of the barrel) of the market. These machines do require financial (in addition to emotional) dedication to keep them in fine condition, and all too often neglect leads to serious 928 health issues. The result: trashed 928s require such a monumental money (and time!) investment to bring them back from the brink that the initial price had better be pocket change. These cars will continue to depreciate as new parts become harder/impossible to obtain over the next decade or so, and they become parts cars.

If you have an S4 that you are considering putting up for sale, I believe that it is within the rules of this forum to introduce yourself, post many detailed pictures of and lots of information about the car, and ask us "What's it worth?"

And if you do part with it, you may have some emotional discomfort and pain from your loss...

I agree with JEC.. lets put it this way... all 928 prices are like dog poop in the back yard of a dog lover, All over the place. How ever i am seeing noticable increases here late.. I have also noticed in the last 3 years for the quanty of 928's on ebay at any given time has dropped about 15%

I wouldn`t wait too long....in the March 2006 edition of Classic Motorsports, Andy Reid`s Auction Action column surprisingly named the 928 as one of the top ten cars to watch for appreciating values....

I'm probably going to have to hold my 928S a LONG TIME (50 years?) to break even on on what I paid and subsequently put into it. Would I do it again? Yes.

It does seem that the neglected 928's are finally marching onwards to 928intl to donate whats left of themselves to the rest of us!! Once the beaters are finally gone...only nice well maintained (regardless of mileage) 928's will be left & those owners will not part with them for cheap....I think the values of nice 928's will at be (at least) flat & probably appreciate a bit in the next few years.....especially the rare cars..like 5-speed GTS's

I ones owned a 1951 1600 Super - sold it to early to cheap
I ones owned a 1959 Speedster - sold that to, what a mistake!
I ones owned a 1983 911 Cabriolet - Gave that to my son who still enjoys it!
I ones owned a 1990 928 S4 - sold it -Said if I ever sell it I get a 5 speed GTS
In 2005 I did find the 5spd GTS - 4 regrets, 1 price less experience in hand!!

Afshin got an extremely nice one, but still will need a maintenance cycle on some stuff. You will have to spend a lot of time and money if the paint or interior are bad; mechanical catch up stuff is easier for the do-it-yourselfer and most will need it anyways.
What I am trying to say is that a cherry S4 is worth whatever you pay. Don't try to go too cheap.
P.S. there are two black/black S4 5 speeds with sport seats on ebay right now!!!

A low mile 5-speed GTS is a collector's car...not really a driver. Pretty soon we'll likely only see them at the big auto auctions.

I think the average and better quality cars are passed their bottom point and are holding if not on the upswing. By the same token, the beaters are getting cheaper.

OK ..."or if prices still have room to drop. " if early 928s could drop to what they are there is little reason to think that S-4 prices can not follow. We do our part culling the herd removing the sick and injured but there will ALWAYS be poor abused neglected cars hanging around . And the real question is not what you pay for one BUT what it often requires to keep one running right looking nice and being dependable especially if you PAY someone to work on it ! The primary reason that they get neglected is quite simply that the owner can not afford or justify the cost to fix it. The ONLY inexpensive part about a 928 is what you pay for it and what you probably will sell it for if you do. Besides where is it written that old cars SHOULD increase in value. The collector speculator car market is more overcooked than the real estate market with $100,000 69 Cameros and $250,000 Cuda's actually that might be part of the 928's appeal it crosses over to the muscle car market somewhat yet is so "affordable". Do not take my comments wrong I think the 928 is a true supercar and if the world were a logical ,fair and equitable place they would all sell for twice what they do !
