Default Is this bad? (fuel pump inoperative - RV)

After recently replacing my secondary fuel pump, I also discovered the primary is not working. It is getting juice and sparks when connected, butmakes no noise. By disconnecting the wire to the pump, I noticed the engine still runs. Should I risk driving the car until I install a functioning pump? or just park it and wait? Will any low pressure pump be an ample replacement?

Bad: yes! Park it, you'll shorten the life of the in-tank pump considerably if you drive on just that one. I also can't imagine it will supply enough fuel to the engine in high-load situations.

No, CIS requires pretty high pressure. Get the correct pump!

Dave, you have the same year 928. The pump directly under the fuel tank, is it a low pressure pump just to supply the high pressure secondary(CIS) pump? The car runs without the use of this pump- although I have not put it under load. Is there an over-the-counter substitute for this pump or do I have to go all the way?

See if it's just jammed. Jump the wires backwards for a secind then try forward again. It's not a permanent solution, but might keep the car driveable for a little while longer.

Both pumps seem to be the same part. I'm sure it's possible to limp along for a while with just one of them, but if one is kaput it will stress the other one. Also, while I have no proof of this one way or another, I imagine it's possible you could get fuel starvation issues under some circumstances. You wouldn't want to go lean under a load, like climbing a mountain!

I was able to "kick start" the primary pump by temporarily connecting the wires in reverse polarity. This seemed to unjam the pump and it is now working fine. Both pumps sound right- as the secondary was sounding strained before when the primary pump was seized up (probably with debris). Thanks so much Flydog for the suggestion- it worked. At least now the car is driving as it should until I can install a new primary pump. Thanks all for your input! It is people like you all that help me, and others, keep these wonderful machines on the road-where they belong!
