MY 80 turbo had one piston in backwards, but with the boost turned up it would
torque steer across several lanes and melt down tires. The best feature
was the small spoiler which would hold a can of BPR without spilling

I loved my '89 900T convertable, solid as a rock... Pre GM.

But I would never compare it to a Shark.

I have a '99 9-5, and it's been a very nice car (daughter's school car). The biggest problem with the Saab I4 after '96 is a botched PCV system causing severe oil sludge potential. Regular, proper oil service with sythetics is the only sure way to avoid the problem (good long blocks run at least $1500 with over 100k miles on them). There are MANY engines trashed due to low/poor oil circulation. My car was bought with a spun #4 main bearing. I swapped engines and it's been fine. Nice ride, good performance. The 9-5 is a bit more solid than the 9-3, IMO. The Aero uses a beefier Garret turbo, and many owner retro that unit into their non-Aero cars. I don't see how the Saab (Aero or not) will embarrass a 928. Those relatively small 4 cylinders just can't breath like the 8 in the 928.

The Saab 9-5 Aero is faster than a 996 turbo from 30-70. The 9-3 Aero has the same engine but is a little lighter. These guys have 250 HP, which is a nice margin on the 79. And like the 928, these particular Saab turbos really moves when up to speed, there 0-60 times are in the mid sixes, but they have some moderate lag, so again like the 928 off the line starts aren't their thing.

Nicole - I actually think the '94-02 900/9-3 5 doors are the nicest looking Saab they've made. Although having a Sonett III would be much cooler.

Lance, your car is giving you the ol' right now. That's not to say that Saab couldn't spank you right back with a few minor mods -- turbos can be like that -- but most stock 4 cylinder cars will run out of wind long before you do. You've got to pick your battles. We OB owners don't have enough hp to be smug; it's better to let the other guy's mouth get *him* in trouble.
