Okay, so here's a question. Why black out your license plate? I mean, it's out there in public every day. Who cares if someone sees your plate?

I'm curious as to how many marks there are throughout the years - are these date/MY specific?

If you have a custom plate... you don't really want to see it duplicated elsewhere either.
Also, there used to be an ongoing eBay scam (maybe still is), where photos were sourced online and offered as legitimate cars for sale. Win the auction and send a deposit and you never hear from them again...
Ultimately, it is a security and privacy issue.

I think some of us are more security minded than others. DMV searches can be done with plate numbers and the car's location can be found. Thieves use this method and by blocking the numbers, it limits the number of possible car thieves to a local level.

A valid VIN number is a better bit of info to have for fraud or theft (if that was feasible)....and those can be found in sales listings on eBay all day long.

Guy on Rennlist 951 forum bought a low mileage 951, spent one and half years upgrading to the maximum performance with all the newest bestest goodies. Chronicled the build on Rennlist and a private web site. 2 months after getting the car home it was stolen from his father's garage that had several other exotic cars that were not stolen. Turned up in the garage of a guy parting cars and selling them here on Rennlist.
